“We have identified the protein that takes this enzyme to the cell’s garbage disposal for removal. Increasing levels of the protein allows more of the enzyme to be eliminated, possibly preventing the high levels seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease,” said senior author Giuseppina Tesco, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the department of neuroscience at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).
This is the first I have heard of this protein angle. Seems lately they are coming out with new angels - I hope they pan out.
The following is from an article in the Alzheimer's Reading Room titled: Three Generations of Alzheimers: A tribute to Carolyn. I thought this portion near the end of the article was interesting as my FIL, his mother and siblings were diagnosed in the 60s but my hb and his sister were diagnosed in the 50s.
I guess we have made progress since science now knows about Alzheimer’s, has some medications to treat symptoms, slow down the progress of the disease and improve life. We only hope a cure will come soon. What seems frightening to me is we know so many people with Alzheimer’s in the family who were diagnosed at ages at least 10 years younger than their parents. As we move forward, are we also moving back?
