My husband, who has frontal dementia, has been in hospitalized at a Veteran's Administration Psychiatric Unit for about five days because he told both his clincal social worker, his psychiatrist, and I that he wanted to hurt/kill people, wants to buy a gun, wants someone to kill him, etc. I have heard nothing from his doctors there. Today, when he called, he told me he was leaving tomorrow. I talked to the charge nurse and she confirmed. Over the phone, he sounded no better, in fact more depressed and more violent. I don't understand this.

What should/can I do to keep others safe?

It is up to the social worker to find a safe place for your husband. If he can get ahold of car keys he could kill some one. If you feel in danger refuse to take him home.

You might try calling the Alz association helpline at 800.272.3900--they seem to have had good advice for others in extreme situations.

You might also be sure to get absolutely every gun out of your house and warn relatives to do the same before he's released. And make a non-911 call to the local police to warn them. Mainly insist that the social worker find a place for him!

If you tell them he is a danger to himself and others do they not have to keep him?

Sherylita, I would be concerned also. My husband has also been admitted to a behavior hospital..not VA, however, he will not be released until I have a family meeting with the Doctor, Nurse & Social Worker, have you had a meeting like this? It will be a week tomorrow from when he was admitted.

DO NOT GO AND GET HIM! LEAVE HIM THERE! LET THEM FIND A PLACEMENT FOR HIM. YOU MUST PROTECT YOURSELF!

Listen to Susan. Do NOT go and get him. Call the social worker at the hospital and inform her that he is NOT GOING HOME WITH YOU. The doctors have not spoken to you and you know nothing about his situation or how to care for someone who is threatening both his own life and yours.

I also agree about calling the non-emergency line for the police and explaining what is going on. There is no requirement that you have someone in your home who has threatened to kill people.

I emailed Joan a couple days ago, and she said she was sending an email to Sheryl. So far, no word. I am so worried.
