I know this has been discussed previously, but I am confused and hope someone will clarify this for me. DH was approved for SSDI in February 2009. The determination letter said his date of disability is April 2008. In October 2008 he received a lump sum payment for May-September 2008. When does he become eligible for Medicare? April 2010 (24 months) or September 2010 (29 months).

Probably April 2010. I would suggest calling Medicare to make sure they are aware of the disability - I'm sure they will want a copy of the determination letter. Hopefully Jane or someone else with more knowledge than I will be able to better answer your question.

He should be eligible for Medicare on the 25th month after his disability date. So I believe that would be this month May, 2010. I would call SS or Medicare to make sure they are aware he is on SSDI and not SS

You are correct Joan, it is determined from the date Social security says the disability began, the wait is 24 months from that date unless you have end stage renal failure or ALS.

Thanks all. I will have to call them because we did not receive anything from the (website says they will send enrollment package 3 months before eligibility date.)
