Right now, I am using an agency to provide an in home aide. My husband has a LTC policy and using an agency is a requirement for them to reimburse me. However, when I want to increase the hours in the future, I've thought about hiring an additional person privately. At that point I'd be paying out of pocket, and it would be roughly half the cost (before SS and insurance, etc.). Has anyone done this?

Marilyn, it is just like hiring a baby sitter. Several of us do that. Of course, we don't ask for any reimbursement for those hours. Those sitters aren't insured and if they steal from you, you don't have the protection you have with an agency. It's just that we need more hours than are provided for us by our policies.

I've just recently hired an old friend of my son's to come and stay with my dh every other week. I do pay out of pocket but feel at this time it is well worth it. I also think my dh sometimes does better staying at home. I do take him to a daycare once a week. I myself am alittle leary of hiring an unknown person, but for now this fits quite nicely.

I hire Andrew for four hours once a week through the agency and once a week privately. Saves me some money (they take a big chunk) but reflects reality: at this point he spends about one and a half hours tending L. and the rest of the time doing house or yard work at my request. Channels his energy, which he has in abundance.

I got a call from my last employer which I left 2yrs ago. They want to know if I want to come back. I told them I would if I could be home every night.

We have a LTC policy but she does not qualify yet, but is getting close. I am thinking 4 hours a day 10 am to 2 pm each day. I have to pay for 60 days of service within a 6 month period, out of pocket before our policy kicks in. I have found a service which charges $15.00 an hour and will bill the insurance co once they pick up.

I am wanting to take the job, once they offer it to me and I am hoping things will work out for now till she needs more care. I plan to keep her at home as long as possible.

moorsb, that sounds great about your job offer. If you can somehow manage it - go for it. Keep yourself in the "loop" and focused.

Moorsb, that sounds like just what you need. Goforit!

briegull--interesting that you have been able to do that. The contract I signed with our Agency prohibits hiring any of their aides privately.

I have told them that I can't afford but one day of care. I aM
A.s only client and he has been coming for a year now. But hiring him to for instance muck out the basement after flooding is not hiring a home health aide.
