This is from an posting on Dr. Mercola's site in March , 2007.

Over the course of a small study, researchers at the University of Wisconsin uncovered strong links between low levels of vitamin D in Alzheimer's patients and poor outcomes on cognitive tests.

Scientists launched the study after family members of Alzheimer's patients who were treated with large doses of prescription vitamin D reported that they were acting and performing better than before.

Researchers believe that optimal vitamin D levels may enhance the amount of important chemicals in the brain and protect brain cells.

Other recent studies have indicated that vitamin D and sunlight exposure can substantially reduce the risk of cancer, the flu, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders. Vitamin D plays a role in the activation of at least 100 genes, many of which are involved in disease prevention.

We take 5,000 IU a day since we live up north and stay inside most of the time. My last blood test showed on the bottom of normal when I was taking 2,000 so I increased it. Maybe I will have my naturopath order one for husband. I doubt the VA will foot the bill. I hope all these studies hold up. I remember back when Vit C, then Vit E were thought to protect against all these diseases. Vit D makes more sense since the body convert sunshine to it. Our body doesn't make Vit C or E.

Charlotte, vitamin D is relatively inexpensive. I use the 50,000 unit capsules once a week. Vitamin D has a half-life in the body of 21-28 days. One hundred capsules, a two year supply, is about $30.

If you use this much, get your D levels checked periodically. Everyone is different. I need about 6,000 units a day plus a 50,000 unit once a week in order to keep my levels up. Neither my Dr. nor the nutritionist have any idea why I need so much.

Mine has been on vitamin D since before his diagnosis because his levels were not good. This might have had an effect on his cognition.

I also take 50,000 unit capsules once a week. My doctor gives them to me. My Vitamin D level was very low and I simply FEEL better since I've been taking them. At first I took one every other day for 2 weeks, then reduced to one a week. It's amazing the difference this little vitamin makes.
