I know this is off topic but...over the past 4 weeks I have had to repair the roof for a leak in the den, replace a broken dishwasher, fix a leaky pipe under the sink, replace a frozen pipe outside, have the fireplace chimney repaired for leaking during the first noreaster (That guy has to come back because it is still leaking), and now, I have a flood in my basement which I'm being told is due to the High water table level. I have pumped it out twice and it keeps coming back. (NO heat or hot water until this problem is solved.) So, its like a water plague and guess the universe is trying to tell me something but I must not be listening because I DON'T GET IT! Someone please help me out with an interpretation??????? :=)
Many hugs for help from the wisest people in the world, you guys, Sue '
That would be wonderful emily, but we tried to sell the house for one year and finally decided to take it off the market when it became clear that my DH could not adjust well to change. I share the feeling "I just can't do it right now.
I once was lucky enough to find a contractor (through the local newspaper, "Contractor: no job too small," who wasn't getting as much work as he needed due to the recession, and when I had a problem, he took over, and if necessary, finding the best tradesmen, supervising, and following up. He had his fee factored in, too, but in the long run, it was worth it because the jobs got done properly the first time. He's moved on now, and so I get recommendations from friends, neighbours and a real estate agent who has a list of the best. The real estate agent is the best for tips on tradespeople who give reasonable, good work , plus I get a reduced rate because it was through her recommendation. (I know she has her eye on selling my house eventually, and I will choose her based on past experience.)
I agree with Mary75 - you can try the local newspaper, but make sure you check references thoroughly. The real estate agent and recommendations through friends are your best bet. You can't do it alone.
I'm sure Phranque would come fix your house, If you took over the caregiving of his 3 loved ones! :o) This is really where we miss having a man around the house. It's amazing to me that one year ago, Jim was still doing all the spring stuff. Wow, how quickly things can change.
Thanks Mary, I have people to hire, I just hate to do so. It's just weird that it is all falling apart at once. Susan, nice of you to offer up Phranque for the sacrifice. I'd love to have him around....Phranque are you listening? I've got a lovely 'mother-in-law' suite downstairs and I am a halfway decent cook although not nearly as good as some of the lovely ladies here!!!! I was just venting a bit. I've managed to keep the water level low enough in the basement to let the plumber restart the hot water heater. Never knew how wonderful warm water was till I missed it! :-)
Yeah, mine had to be restarted too (and I couldn't do it myself. The plumber had to blow-dry all the components with his compressor, etc.) The water's coming up through the floor of the basement. It's annoying bec. the pump doesn't work with less than 1/2" of water, it just sits there and buzzes. So then you have to use a wet vac. Andrew was here today and worked all day in the basement cleaning it out. As he says, this was for the good, look at all the cleaning that got done! But the water continues to come up.
Here, Here....the water keeps a coming. Well, it's been quality time in the cellar with my daughter who came in from Philly for the weekend. The water table has to go down eventually, Right?
