Well I guess the appointment went quite well. I had the doctor read the print out before seeing DH. The print out was over 21/2 pages. He did mention in front of DH that it was halluncinations and that the job doesn't exsist. He told me to just walk away when DH brings it up, which I am sure he will do again. He always says he won't then two days later we are off again. The doctor also didn't want to change the meds or the dosage of Sertraline. He said if DH gets worse to let him know and mentioned trying Seroquel. I think he didn't want to change any meds incase it makes DH less functional....apparently DH is still mid stage. We go back in 6 months the day after DH's birthday.
We stopped on the way home for a late breakfast and DH said he thought that was the best meeting we had had with the doctor!
DH had a neurologist appointment on Monday. He was tested with the mini-mental and then we talked to the doctor. His score was 21 which is what it was 6 months ago. This Dr. is very concerned about Bob's vitamin D level He has been on a prescription vitamin D twice a weak for about 6 months. He had blood work and they called to say it was 37 and he is to stay on the same dosage. I am not sure what this has to do with AD. The Dr. also spent a great deal of time doing paper work which he said is required by Medicare. Medicare reimbursement is minimal and we always pay the difference. I never got a chance to tell the Dr. about problems I see which are more serious that what is measured by the mini-mental score.
I have read lots of studies about Vitamin D deficiency and cognitive decline. Also, as people age their skin does not absorb the sun like it did when younger - therefore, lots of older people have a deficiency. My DH takes a huge amount of Vit. D once a week - can't remember right now what the dosage is. My level is excellent, but I work in the yard almost year round. DH doesn't do that anymore. And, he is 86, I am 70.
My DH's neurologist visit was the best he has ever had! His minimental exam was 27/30. He was not aggressive, as he was at his last meeting, but he was visibly angry as the doctor began the first of the questions. He gets angry because he "thinks they think he is a 'dummy'." He calmed down and the visit was a good one. But, the very next day, the slightest thing made him angry and he's been this way since last Friday. This is so difficult to live with. And when I tell the family how good the visit went, they automatically think the problems aren't as bad as they really are.
