Hello! My 71 year old mother is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. :( I believe she is depressed and discussed this with her doctor. She is currently taking 10mg of Aricept daily. Some days are good and some are bad. None are horrible. He prescribed 15mg of Remeron nightly as well. I googled the medication and it concerns me. It appears to be a very strong medication and I am hesitant to fill it. She tried Effexor about a year ago and had horrible results. A speaker at our support group mentioned Zoloft and Lexepro to be good drugs for those on aricept. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with the medication REMERON?

I appreciate any and all advice!

Adrienne, I have no experience but others have. Click on search above, then advance search and do a search where it was in the post (the second one down - the first is where it is in topic name). You will find replies there from those with experience. They will come along soon and share with you but in the meantime you can read the post.

I have no experience with Remeron but my DW with alz has been on lexapro for several years and has good results. she was on aricept during this time but has since stopped the aricept and is only on namenda. I have experience with zoloft and it wors very well for me to help cope with the stress.

My DH has been on Remeron since his diagnosis. He was on Aricept along with it for a few years. We have since stopped the aricept and continue with Remeron. He started on 30 mg per day and later went up to 45 mg. It has worked well for him for depression. It is also an appetite enhancer which is good for my DH because he's very thin. We have not experienced any adverse side effects from the Remeron.

Regarding the medicines, I see where some have stopped Aricept ( my DH is on exelon) but kept the Namenda.
What are the reasons the Aricept are stopped? What is the Namenda doing to try to stabilize?I know the Aricept and Exelon and Namenda do different things.

My hb was on Aricept and Namenda; then Exelon 4.6 took the place of Aricept. Now we're using 9.5 Exelon patch and continuing Namenda 10 mg twice a day. Neurologist said as his dementia was worsening, the Aricept was less effective hence the Exelon. He continues the downward slope; maybe it's not so rapid, but who knows?
