Do you have to bring your AD spouse with when you see an eldercare lawyer? Can things be taken care of without him along? Right now he doesn't understand why I need to see one, and he doesn't even believe anything is wrong with him. I finally got the courage to make an appt. but I'm afraid of his reaction when and if I tell him. I don't want a confrontation about this.
No, Bev, you don't have to have your spouse with you when you see an Elder Law attorney. I know from first hand knowledge over the course of several years. I hired one when I was first made aware of my husband's diagnosis. No other kind of lawyer will do for the kinds of issues you will face. You MUST protect yourself (and family, business interests, properties, etc) and these guys are the pros. ALZ will take everything from you. Someone who knows what they are doing HAS GOT to be your rep. I did take John to meet "our" attorney eventually....and it was at a convenient time when some important documents needed his signature. GOOD FOR YOU! Many people wait til its too late to call on that special kind of legal aid. He or she will be looking out for YOUR best interests. HOORAY! (self care is good)
Thanks to both of you. I'll have to think of something creative to use when I try to get all my documents into the car, maybe when he's asleep??? And, I'll have to think of a "white" lie to tell him about where I'm going at 3 in the afternoon. I am suuuch a bad liar...... But, as you say, Briegull, I've got to get used to it.
You guys are so helpful on this website. Don't know what I'd do without you.
