My DW has been in a good NH since Jan 6 and it is getting better but still very trying. several things I have learned are:
Getting to know the aides as will as nurses.
Find out which activities our LO seems to like.
Bring things like teddy bears for the wifes at least. Carol likes her kitty teddy
Develop a relationship with other patients and other caregivers.
Encourage therapy, especially walking. NH's seem to prefer more wheelchair use (which is of course safer)

Im still learning but thought some of you might have some other learned experiences at NH's. Pls add your comments.

Try not to go at the same time every day, so they will never know when you are coming, and will keep "on their toes". You will get to know the nurses and aides on different shifts that way.

billeld - Everything you said is right on. My husband has been in facility 8 months and is doing well. All of the above is good advice, especially about getting to know the aides. The nurses are great but I find the the aides do most of the hands on care and are better able to tell me about his day to day routine and his likes and dislikes better than anyone else. Since my husband can not communicate, I have "adopted" a couple of the ladies who don't seem to have much company. Sometimes they are sweet and sometimes cranky, but I love them anyway.

I agree with all the above suggestions. When my uncle was in the NH, it was important to make friends with the other residents too, as much as was allowed. They looked forward to our visits as much as my uncle looked forward to seeing us. And it was helpful when one of the ladies took a liking to my uncle which my aunt was not too thrilled with but after awhile it smoothed out. They also liked it when we got involved with some of the activities like sing a longs..they seemed to get a kick out of that. So where possible during some of the fun activities, join in a little.
