After using several different brands of disposable underpants, I find none work that well. My DH needs it at both ends and when he has had an accident (day or night) he wets/poops through. The problem seems to be the fact that the underpants only cover a portion front/back. Does anyone know of one that goes up higher and includes the side areas? I find too that they tear pretty easily.
Thanks for any suggestions. Yes, cost can be an issue.

When my dad was finally in need of depends..we just had to end up using the kind that have the tabs. They stayed in place better and there were very few of those accidents. It is sort of humiliating to have to do this or receive this kind of dressing...it is just plain sad.

I found that the CVS brand of pull-ups for men worked best when my husband was at home. He is now in a facility and they use the kind with tabs. The pull ups were nice for me as I couldn't seem to hold the diaper and fasten the tabs at the same time. The bad thing about the pull ups was that I had to take his shoes and pants off in order to get a new one one him. The ones at the facility seem to work well and now that he is in a wheel chair, don't have to worry about them coming loose when he walks.

do a search on the discussion titled "incontinence" and you'll find more than you ever wanted to know. Bottom line: try them all. DOn't buy more than one package of any until you know what you need. The pull up kind seem to work better if they know what's going on and object to wearing something. I use the ones from WalMart (Assurance) and they work fine for us - they don't tear. Others prefer the Depends. Tena is liked by Divvi and many others but it's harder to find. Are you sure if they don't go up high and include the side areas that you're not just getting "guards" rather than "briefs" ?? They all have a rating on them about how much they absorb. Don't trust it except to rank it against others. You want the kind that are four or five "drops" full. And try different sizes.

I had the same problem with the pull ups until I finally bought the Tena overnight pads to use with the pull ups. I put one of the Tena overnight pads across the top of the stomach part of the depend and one of the heavy pads in the bottom part of the depend, my husband never leaks through.

Jane, funny you should say that. Last night I cut one of the pads and put it around his waist but did not get the results I wanted. I'm not quite sure I picture what you do. Would you explain it a little more? Do you mean the pads for the bed? I also tried the guards and put one on each side.

Thank you all for your advice. I also believe the WalMart brand is as good as the others and a lot cheaper. I also found I had to be careful of size as some large are really a medium.

I did check the internet but they really don't go into much detail so I e-mailed Tena and Depends.

I'll let you know what I find out. Jane I look forward to your next comment. Thanks.

I saw something about MAGS (Max. absorbancy garments that NASA uses). Does anyone know where they can be purchased?

Perhaps you can ask Lisa Nowak, the astronaut who wore the diapers to assault her boyfriend, which kind of diapers she used when she planned the attack...Seems like they worked rather well for her.....

    Very funny, phranque.

When I typed in "Mags" I ended up with a list of magazine companies. Last night I put a Poise pad in front & back above the normal padding but still had wet t-shirt this morning.

To be honest, he wears knit (lacrosse-type) shirts daily. He wears a t-shirt underneath. I leave those on at night, put on the Assurance pants, with a supp. pad, and flannel pj pants (you can buy them cheap at outlet stores, ca. $7). EVERYTHING goes into the wash in the morning. Doesn't seem to matter how much I put on the bottom, everything gets wet. You just get used to it and your hot water bill goes up!!

    briegull,
I never could figure out how to keep dh dry at night. I doubled this and doubled that and tried this and tried that. But after a year It just became routine to get up every morning to everything being wet. It just become routine to strip the bed and do laundry every morning.

Ok, I tried something the last couple of nights and it seemed to work pretty well. I took two disposable guards one on each side of the disposable underpants where there is no protection. After an all nighter, his t-shirt was dry and just a little urine on the pad. Tonight I am trying a larger size pant to see how that goes.

    brindle,
At first I used just the pull ups and put a heavy Tena pad in the bottom part and what they call an overnight Tena Pad across the stomach part inside the pull up,( brindle, make sure his little pee pee is pointed down when you pull up the depends or diaper,) what works best for me is use the tape on diaper, put a Tena overnight pad inside the diaper where it goes across the stomach part and a pull up on the outside of the diaper. This works perfect for us. I could not stand to have to change sheets daily. He sometimes leaks through but hardly ever. I start pushing liquids early in the day and try to have the last liquids in by 5:pm. I have him in bed between 6 and 7 pm each night.

brindle, the over night Tena pad is larger than the guards and covers more area, they are more like full coverage. Big difference from the guards, try them.

I forgot to mention in my post above that my dad was an amputee. So we pretty much had to use the tab style. One thing we also used were some of the large mattress pad like sheet protectors that we bought at a medical supply store. They worked very well, better than those paperlike hospital bed pads.

I not looking forward to the day when my DH is in this situation..(grimace)

I think it is the Vermont Store that sells the large bed pads too.

In case you have not heard, the company that supplied the disposables for NASA went out of business and there is not a replacement. My understanding is that NASA bought up thousands after hearing the company was going out of business. Sounds like an opportunity for someone.
