Don't know why, but my DH had all but quit eating a few months ago. He lost a lot of weight and I was worried. Said he just wasn't hungry. Over the past month or so, he is eating like a pig! He always tells me how good the meals are, that he's never had anything so good! He has now gained his regular weight back. He rarely ate desserts. Now he wants dessert, mostly ice cream, after every meal.

He has always taken the dog out for a walk before breakfast and at noon. I took her after feeding around 5:00 before our dinner. He took her before he went up to bed. Now he doesn't want me taking her out at all! Said it's too cold for me to be outside and he doesn't want me to get sick.

For many months I've been picking out his clothes for the day because he couldn't get the colors right. During this same period of time, he now can choose pants, shirts, socks that match!

I haven't been giving him coconut oil, but I have been giving him lots of chocolate!

Vickie, I saw alot of the same with my husband. He seemed to be alright for a little while and then would slip even further into the AD. I hope that yours is a continued improvement. And they say that chocolate (the dark kind) is good for the heart and the brain. Best of luck with this and arms around (((((hugs))))).

Vickie, I know what you are going thru. My dh does the same thing. One day he does not know how to show consideration and the next day he is really concerned for my well being. I have spoke with him about this and he says I need to take care of myself so I can take care of him. He is scared I will not be around. Many times I see the old dh and even tho I know it is not going to last, I relish in the good days. I miss them so much when things get back to the steady decline. He is declining more and more every day. My dh does not always know when he is hungry or full so I am the one that makes him eat and eat he does...... He has not lost that yet. He is beginning to eat things he never liked before. I know his taste buds and nose are going thru a change.

I hope the good times last for you and your loved one as long as possible, God Bless and keep you.

Vickie, I hope this continues with your DH for a long time. It must be so uplifting to your spirits! My DH desperately NEEDS to lose weight (5'7" and 216 lbs.) and I am trying to control his diet some without him fighting me on it. But I have considered this - what if I get him losing and then he can't stop and gets too thin? It's a balancing act. Enjoy all positive improvements while they last. Have a great weekend. Elena

Thanks, Elena. It has been a good week. I am a little worried about his eating too much though. I have been just fixing his plate rather than put dishes on the table, so at least I can cut back the portions a little. He is 6'1" and normal weight is around 204. When he lost weight, he went down to 185, but is now back up to 206. I do not want him to gain anymore because it isn't good on his knees. This is a balancing act, isn't it??? Guess I'll have to cut back on the chocolate too!

vickie i think its just part of the disease. they lose lbs then gain it back then lose again depending on what metabolistics are affected. some of the meds can cause weight loss or gain as well. with the changing metabolics they tend to decrease or increase effects on calorie intake. less does seem better if knees are involved. good luck limiting the chocolate intake... not working here.

Don't think it will work here either, divvi. At least for me anyway!

They weigh my husband once a month at the facility. His high point was 158 and he is now about 149. It was down to 145 at one point. He eats all of his meals. They do monitor his weight and up the carbs or lower them depending on how he is. Wegiht gain/loss is normal for the disease - the switches in their brains that says they are hungry or full eventually break. Their metablolism changes and can increase the weight the lose or gain. It is hard to watch this and keep up with where he is.

My DH has been saying he has no appetite at all and then he will eat huge meals. He looks thinner to me but the scales still say 185. I don't know what exactly to expect next and I'm getting scared again.

    Faye,
You bring up something I have been wondering about...thinking back to my mom when she had this, she started with the swallowing problems, first doing a chipmunk storage thing, then choking. The other day, DH mentioned his throat was sore,,I thought maybe he was coming down with a cold..nope..but I have noticed he has a sort of cough..he also will choke on a little drink or food..I wonder if this is the start of swallowing problems? Or is it something maybe related to a nerve disorder from either diabetes or this AD thing?

With my mom we used ensure and anything else that was soft baby foods too. Her meds were mashed up and mixed with that or applesauce. The problem is getting enough into them.
