DH went for his walk a while ago, when he got home he said he almost didn't make it back so I suggested he should perhaps stop the walks. He agreed but who knows if he will remember tomorrow! I am going to the beauty shop and then to gas my car and maybe the store so I am hoping he won't go for a walk while I am gone. Will try and get him to wait until I get back.

Been there. Done that. My husband did very long, 2 hour walks, for over a year after he stopped driving. Scared me silly. He has finally stopped, but it took a couple of months before it totally stopped. Scary as hell!

DW and I go for walks she moves so slow I do not get much exercise out of it. She wants to go so we have been wallking down to the marina about 1/2 mile one way. I want her to keep walking and be active as long as possible, the exercise is good for blood flow to the brain.

My kids each got a device called "Backtrack" made by Bushnell for Christmas. (they'll never use them) My DH was testing it out yesterday and said it works very well. If you are out for a walk and press a button, it will give you directions back to your house. I don't know if your DH could operate it, but it might be worth a shot, to give him that freedom a little longer. I think they can be bought at Walmart. Here's a link to the product:

This morning when we left church and crossed the road to get to our car in the parking I didn't think DH was walking quite right. I asked if his legs were bothering him and he said no it was his shoes, he could feel the gravel through the sole. We then went for breakfast and when we were leaving there DH said it might be his legs bothering him. His answer is to exercise more and strengthen his legs. I'm not sure that is the answer for an 81 year old man with AD!
