Has anyones lo have trouble with severe constipation to where they gey impacted. I've got him unplugged . What a mess. I'm trying high fiber foods if I can get him to eat it. Also I keep telling him to walk around and drink water. He won't drink much fluids and all he wants to do is sleep.

The only thing I found that worked for DH was Miralax. I would mix it in his juice, in his coffee or sprinkle it over his cereal. They say there is no taste and he never seemed to notice when I started useing it. I gave it to him every morning and he would have daily movements.
Nothing else seemed to work for him.

    Thank you

My problem is the opposite - diarrhea, or at least very loose stools. I've tried Immodium, but this seems to stop the BM's completely. Has anyone tried anything else?
  2.
Foster was given Rx.. Lomotil.. for diarrhea. It worked very well'!

My mother took Colace ( over the counter pill) it is very gentle and she said it worked great.

For constipation - prunes, fruits, peas, etc.

For loose stools, lots of breads and milk products.

Those are Granny's remedies..... Give X-Lax at your own peril....for clean up operations get messy!

I also have the same problem as Marsh. Loose stool, every time he goes, like explosive bowel. I was actually thinking of calling the doctor for help.
I also have tried Imodium, with no success. Never heard about bread & milk.

Kadee coconut cookies can sometimes really help. I have read that on Peoples' Pharmacy and in the newspaper, for some reason Archway are specified
  5.
Kadee, that is milk products, including cheese and butter as well as milk. A combination of all is better...butter on the cornbread and corn; cheese toast; cheese quesadillas; etc...

coconut cookies are good too. with milk to drink! <grin>

For months I fought with this problem, using Pericolace and Fiber Therapy. Finally came across a report by a Dr./Consultant on another support website. She detailed that they don't work when Psych meds like we use are in the med list for our LOs. She provided the names of about 1/2 dozen meds that do. I took the list to our Pharmacist. Told him this is the problem; these don't work. A Dr./Consultant says these will. Which would be safest and best for DH?

He indicated that Dulcolax or Miralax would be best. Suggested I try each. Have tried them and for DH Dulcolax is best. I do give 2 Fiber Caplets a day, for bulk since he refuses to eat enough fiber at all; and we're in a system where a dulcolax 2 times a week (not on a day we're going anywhere) works great.

My DH has taken Citrucel for many years. You can buy the caplets or a powder that mixes with water and taste like orange juice. It is advertised as the only fiber that won't cause gas.

Just remember that it is important to keep the fluids moving through them if giving fiber supplements.

My husband is still managing constipation himself and overreacting instead of getting himself on a steady schedule. He is afraid that if he takes even Miralax regularly he will end up with diarrhea and an accident. He takes fiber and stool softener regularly, and Miralax when needed. The doctor said it is ok to take a stimulant laxative on a daily basis if he needs that. When he has gotten really blocked the only thing that works is the bottle of magnesium citrate that is usually part of prep for a colonoscopy. He went to urgent care once for the problem before we found that solution.

Archway Coconut Cookies will be on my grocery list. I made grilled cheese last night, also gave him a slice of cheese to eat. The Neurologist suggested Benefiber so I have been adding it to drinks & food.
I have cut out candy, which seems to make him worse.

Pam, try just giving him magnesium pills (if he can still take them) vs the magnesium citrate. I take 250mg a night to help with constipation. It also helps to calm nerves and muscles. I give it my hb for leg pain. Aloe juice also is good for constipation - just have to find out how much it takes so you don't go to diarrhea. My sister swears by Kiwi - a Kiwi a day. Also, I wonder how much their thyroid is affected by AD? Low thyroid can cause constipation.

My DH goes along really well for a while and then no bm for a couple of days. I tried others but Sinokot seems to work within 5 hrs (2 tabs crushed in applesauce). Sometimes DH bm is so large and hard I have to remove it from the toilet or it will stop it up. I know, gross! I have been trying extra fiber oatmeal (it has twice he fiber). Found that when the glass has a color in it, he drinks it better. I think water is just too clear so sometimes I add a little juice or gatoraid.

There are new Fiber Bars on the market now that contain 35% of your daily fiber requirement. They have a generous amount of chocolate in them and are delicious. One or two a day should solve your problem the easy way.

My husband had a fecal impaction this week. The dr at the ALF ordered Miralax and Colace.

Fiber is not always the answer. If I eat too much - it constipates me bad. As someone who has a history of spastic colon, I have to be careful. I argue with my sister regarding this all the time as she believes fiber will never cause a problem.

Also, fiber is made up of carbohydrates. If you are diabetic, you are supposed to limit carbs.

Charlotte, DH reacts the same way with a lot of fiber. Have to be careful with him and fiber or he will get constipated. Sooooo much to learn and do!
