This version just came out--it is a type that can dissolve on the tongue, in case the patient can't swallow. My husband's doctor said it will be fine for him to just swallow it. Not sure if the pharmacies have stocked it yet, though.
I've been waiting for the big two--aricept and namenda--to go generic, as we fell into the donut hole in November this year. Surely though, the minute they do, something else will be promoted under strict patent and we'll all feel terrible if we don't let our spouses try it.
I had that article posted under the Breaking News section on the home page, but have since archived it in the Articles of Interest Section under Drugs and Treatments - http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm194173.htm
Here's the latest I could find: The Pfizer patent for Aricept is due to expire Nov. 2010.
"Aricept (donepezil) — Pfizer/Eisai is to lose patent protection in 2010 on this treatment for symptoms of early Alzheimer's. Teva has gained tentative FDA approval to market its generic version; however, Eisai and Teva are locked in a patent challenge, keeping the generic off the market for now."
My husband was getting donepezil from the VA as long as five years ago. Strange that the government can obtain generic and we can't. It may have come from Canada which was no problem for me.
