Here is the link to an article about AD from a woman, Kate Mulgrew, whose mother has the disease. She has the right idea - prevention is more likely to be helpful than cure. She compares it to prevention versus cure for Polio.
Kate Mulgrew is a stage, film and television actress who is best known for her TV role in "Star Trek: Voyager." She is currently appearing in the NBC series "Mercy."
When I first read your post about "prevention", I thought the article was going to be another one about crossword puzzles, exercise, and eating a proper diet. After reading the article, I do agree with the "prevention" strategy. I think it would be soooooo much more difficult to get the placque out of the brain once it has accumulated than preventing it from accumulating in the first place.
I became a fan of her's when she was in the soap 'Ryans Hope'. I like what she says and really pray she can get the support and funding needed to pursue the prevention theory to make it a reality.
I have the same fears for my children, (obviously,) as she expresses for her son, the artist. Despite our not having the "familial" genetic variety, that they still might be more susceptible than average, because their father was, is worrisome enough. Something to prevent would be a dream come true.
I went to an AD conference today and the projections for the future they gave about the baby boom generation and AD were staggering. Also depressing was the relatively small amount spent on AD research vis-a-vis other diseases. Unless our gov't wakes up and devotes more resources, neither prevention, treatment nor a cure will be here any time soon.
Kate Mulgrew's speech at the convention which was like a short summary of what many who have gone the journey post here. This is her blog site where you can click on the speech to hear or read it: http://katemulgrew.wordpress.com/category/alzheimers/
