Does anyone know how to get rid of SPAM? I never used to get any but now whenever I check my Email there is SPAM. More than one for a Kimberly! I delete them right away but I would like to get rid of them permanently if it's possible. I have run all my spyware etc.
Spyware doesn't really help with junk email. It's for preventing or eliminating unwanted accidental or malicious downloads from the internet. Unfortunately emails get disseminated amongst spammers quickly, once it appears anywhere online, which is a reason to be careful how and when you give your email address. Some email programs have pretty good spam filters, but--as Vickie points out--once an unwanted email comes, you can click that it's Spam, or block it.
What gets really frustrating is when you get email from yourself, at your own domain, to YOU, which is unspeakable spam.
I love using Gmail; you probably can forward your mail to it from wherever you get it now. Gmail has a really good spam filter and although I get about 300 spams a week they all go into the spam catcher and I never see them, occasionally delete them. Gmail is an on-line free mail service (like Yahoo or hotmail) so you can read your mail on whatever computer you're near.
You need a virus checker that actually moves SPAM to a SPAM folder based on your own actions and requests to the program. I use McAfee.
You also might need an email program or an Internet provider who actually blocks all known SPAM. I use Verizon. If I catch half a dozen emails in the SPAM folder every week, it is a lot. Verizon keeps a clean house. But my Yahoo mail inbox folder is actually pretty clean most of the time too although the SPAM folder is a sewer. My daughter uses Gmail and likes that one too. It is the combination of SPAM folder and Virus Checker that does the trick.
Well Duh! I found where to block the senders. For all the years I've had a computer I never got SPAM until the last few weeks. I've just blocked 5 of them!!!!!
Ok, and if your browser allows you to, mark them as spam, don't just delete them. hereafter they will go into your spam box. Be careful what you mark spam, and check occasionally to make sure no real mail goes to spam.
It is VERY important to check the SPAM folder every time you go online when you first start using it. Some programs will make assumptions based on things you have marked as SPAM that won't be correct. If you find something in there that is not SPAM, you need to mark it NOT SPAM.
The more you use the systems, the better they work.
There was one SPAM group that confused Verizon. It turns out that once they had begun to spot them they stuck the emails in the SPAM folder and ASKED if it really was SPAM. After a while they no longer showed up because Verizon had blocked them.
I keep blocking the SPAM mails but I am still getting lots of them and I know some of them are from those I blocked. Is there a way to get rid of them once and for all?
Jean, some e-mail programs have a certain number you can "block". I know on Yahoo you can only block 500 - then if you want to block more, you have to unblock some of the old ones.
Do these e-mails actually go into your spam folder or into your in-box?
It is frustrating because no matter what you do, they will find a way to get around it. It is one the nasty parts of the the internet. My email provider blocks about 90% of it because I have it set high. But I also check daily for email that is not spam. Usually if it is new, it will go to the spam folder. I have my own domain name and run it thru godaddy who gives options for how high you want the spam check.
What I would do is have one email address for just friends, family and financial. When on the web, when you fill out anything including on Facebook and here use a different email address. I have a netzero address that I use when joining different sites like newspapers, tv, radio, etc. I usually delete 90% of the email that comes there, but none is the porn type email. If I am in a site I never want to hear from again, I give a yahoo address (a different one than posted here) that I only check every couples months and just delete everything. The yahoo address I use here I have yet to get spam which surprises me.
I have 3 e-mail accounts..Windows (bellsouth), Gmail, and Yahoo. I very seldom get spam on any of these accounts. Having said that I'd better "knock on wood" because it may be different in the future.
I use Outlook Express most of the time because it is easier and faster to get my email. Road Runner is my server but to get the email I have to get on the Internet, click on Mail and then enter my email address and password. I never ever got spam until the last couple of months so I don't know what happened.
