Since my DH's psych hospitalization to regulate medications for anger and aggressive behavior he has not slept more than 3 hours at a time. We have tried Ambien and Rozerem but they have not worked for him. The hospice nurse suggested Restoril for sleep. Does anyone have experience with this drug?
Restoril was given to my husband a few months ago after trying Ambien and other sleep aides. The Restoril didn't work either. He didn't have any major side effects from it, it just did not help him sleep. We went through a period where NOTHING helped him sleep. Thank goodness that time has passed.
Our neurologist said that restoril is not recommended for dementia patients. He didn't say why. Maybe we will just have to wait for this phase to pass also.
Hildann - if you read post on seroquel and other drugs they say they are not recommended for dementia patients. But try taking them away from spouses on this site and you will have a war going. This is a terminal disease - if by a rare instant they have a 'black box' reaction and die, then so be it. If it helps him sleep, then do it. Of course, if the doctor prescribes it, then it is your decision whether to ignore 'black box' warnings and try it. But then again, there are others that have spouses that sleep very little right now or have gone through a stage where they slept little. Fine for them, but it makes it hard on you, the caregiver when you don't get your rest.
