Hi--My dh has begun hiccuping. He used to do this sporadically, but the past few days, he's been doing it more. It happens when he is eating. He begins hiccuping, and if it doesn't go away, stops eating.
I will start hiccuping if my food doesn't go down right (or feels that way). I need to drink something to stop it.. It could be that he is not chewing his food up, taking too big of bites, or is having trouble swallowing. When they start, see if you can get him to drink something and see if that stops it.
The hiccups can be a sign of ESRD in diabetics who have kidney problems, as does my dh. That's why I'm wondering about it. It comes and goes.
The Seroquel seems to be working well for him. I realized yesterday that his outbursts are fewer. I can still see the anger simmering just under the surface, but he's better able to not lash out now. He's on 25 mg am, and 50 mg pm.
Hanging On, my DH hiccups at night while he's sleeping. Usually around early morning 3 or 4 am, hiccups 4 to 6 times, stops and continues the snoring he was doing before the hiccups.
My DH is doing the same thing and when I asked about it on the sister support group before I knew about this lovely one they said that it sounding like myoclonus. The sound is just like a hiccup but it sounds more like a short chirping noise(that he makes when he is trying to gulp the air). They said that he is trying to breath. If you look up myoclonus(not saying that is what it is, but just looking it up) It is a contraction of muscles that are used to breath. That was one of the may things that I was going to tell his dr. when I see him in Feb. The research says that as time goes on he will do it at other times than just eating. They say it can happen when they walk too. My husband tells me at times that he "forgets" to breath. So what I do is look at him and make exaggerated inhaling moves and exhaling moves and tell him to breath. I am afraid(trying not to be) that he will one day forget to breath from longer periods of time. When he says he forgets to breath I don't think he actually stopped breathing I think he is not breathing appropriately. I asked the dr. if he had asthma and he said no.
