My dreams came true in October 2004 when the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years, and the first time since I moved to Massachusetts 34 years before. I lived to see it; I can die happy. Now I don't care who wins. As long as it's not the Yankees. Whoops. My 91 year old father has been a Yankee fan for at least 85 of those 91 years.
I agree about Boston - what a happy day when they won the World Series. We were so disappointed when they were knocked out of the playoffs. We will root for anyone the Yankees play.
Dyed in the wool, season ticket holder, bleed Dodger blue, Dodger fan! Hey, born and raised in So Cal. My entire Phamily lives in the Philly area, so am definately cheering for the Phillies. Can't be a Yankee fan. Or a Red Sox fan. Don't mean to offend, it's just who I am. And you're right Bluedaze. There's also hockey!!!!!
I am not a lover of baseball but I do not like the Yankees. DH wanted them to win so I made sure I told him that the Phillies won. I am like most of you here, whoever is playing the Yankees I want that team to win!
Reminds me of a grumpy old man friend of my parents. Most of Texas is diehard Cowboy country, well, not ole Joe. He always said he was rooting for whoever was playing the Cowboys!
I'm not a baseball fan. But I grew up in the Bronx near the El. Back then you could watch the game from the train station that was right above Yankee Stadium (the old one, of course) and when we lived in New Jersey, we went to see them once in a while. Lots of fun.
We lived in California in Orange County. The Angels aren't a LA team, they are a Orange County team! And I've seen them play too.
And now I live in Pennsylvania in an area serviced by the Philadelphia stations. I've never seen the Phillies play, but I love how the stations here get all excited over the teams when they do well, and support them even when they don't.
I grew up in Pennsylvania-Philly to be exact. We had two teams-the Phillies and the A's before they turned traiter and headed west. When they played each other in the world series I didn't know who to root for.
Growing up, Los Angeles wasn't really much of a sports town. Even today I don't think we rival eastern cities enthusiam. As a teen-ager I lived in Balto/DC & everyone kept talking about Orioles, etc. I never understood all the excitement. We had Los Angeles Angaels at Wrigley Field & Gilmore, other teams, all gone now. CBS now occupies Gilmore property. They'd have auto races there & one could hear the engines all across town, there were NO high buildings, only 13-story City Hall downtown, sound traveled. Then the Dodgers came--a little more excitement, but transplants were always rooting for Yankees, Phillies, Cubs--someone someplace else. Same today, altho Lakers & Dodgers do quite well most of the time. I rent rooms to college men & currently one from the east is sitting in my den, his girlfriend on his lap, in my big arm chair watching the Phillies/Yankees. He was upset last night, we'll see how it goes tonight. He's really into it. The Los Angeles Angels went to Anaheim (Orange County.) I think I have this all more or less correct.
When the Angels were in the World Series I lived in Orange County. No one cared until the actual World Series started, and then there was shock over WHO was in the series. The Angels get no respect.
LA ought to be able to support a football team, but has been unable to consistently. I did go to one game the last year they had a team, and the park they were in was so bad you literally could not see the game from the seats we were in.
I also am a Cowboy fan along with my whole family and 099.9% of the Dallas area. about 50 years ago, I took my DW to a Cowboy vs Packer game and had tickets on the 50l yd line 8th row. She went to sleep near end of first half when Cowboys were marching for a touchdown. I should have known she was going to end up with AD. So here I am, a caregiver but at least she will now watch football. Go Cowboys, bill
ah Bill, remember the days when Coach Landry was at the helm. Those were my favorite years as a Cowboy fan! He was amazing! I try to support the Houston Texans, but they'll never have that "aura" the Cowboys possess.
I'm not a baseball fan and neither was hb, but w/his dementia, he can't follow story lines, so started watching baseball tho' not excited about it. He went to be early last night, and I watched the game (or had it on) while I read. Definitely wanted to "spread the wealth" so was hoping the Phillies would overcome. I enjoy watching football, but I really don't understand why we pay anyone in professional sports (or "Hollywood" folk) more than many other professionals that actually improve our lives or help us live comfortably. I worked w/a diehard sports fan who tho't the pay scale was just fine--they entertain us????
Marsh, how did the gay marriage issue come out. Last report I saw it was even - 50% for and 50% against. We have a run-off election now for Mayor. The woman candidate is a pro-active Lesbian - and the man is a Black Attorney who is active in civil rights and the rights of Minorities. Living in a city that is 30% white, 25% Blk, 38% Hispanic, 6% Asian... I wonder who is truly a MINORITY?? Looks even-steven to me..for the most part.
Charlotte is right. The law allowing gay marriage, passed by the legislature and signed by the governor, was voted down by just over 50% of the population. The distribution was interesting in that the urban area (yes, we do have some) voted in favor of gay marriage while the rural areas voted against.
