Paul is in the local Rehab Hospital following a UTI, ER, Rehab, back to ER, back to Rehab. Divvi was right about the UTI. This was our first experience and the past week has been pretty much a roller coaster. Things have settled down today and he has been co-operative with us. We have daytime covered with caregiver, daughters and I being there from daylight to dark. He thinks I should stay there with him all the time. We have all told him I can't or I would get sick. Looking at him being released next Wed. and he can't wait. He has already regained so much of his strength and I think the interaction in a busy place has been good for him. Going to see if day care looks like something he would do for a half day a week.

Lois, I'm sorry about the problems with a UTI. We haven't had one yet. I'm glad Paul's doing better now.

I would never have dreamed how a Urinary Tract Infection could affect their mental status as much as it does. My husband was absolutely horrible, he bit me, screamed and was just horrible. Had no idea what was happening until the next day when the doctor came by. Of course, he went straight to the hospital. That was eighteen months ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday! Ya don't forget times like that.

What are the symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)? And how can you tell with someone with dementia?

Lois, I'm so glad to know Paul is doing better. Day care sounds like a good idea. I think sometimes, in our efforts to do the very best we can for our spouses by caring for them at home, we lose sight of the fact that they may respond very well to the stimulation of a group setting, whether daycare of a residential facility. Good luck.

Lois, so glad Paul is getting stronger now and the uti is under control. your experience is exactly why i harp on it so much. those who havent experienced a bad one have no idea how dreadful and deadly they can get.

kadee there are lots of signs or then again not. some manifest over time slowly it seems and then hit fullblast. the trick to avoiding them and hygiene and lots of hydration. women can be esp prone to them due to the hygiene issues. anyway the only real way to know if to have a uti urine sample but the over the counter AZZO strips work well most of the time to give you aheads up if something is amiss. then you can get to the dr for a followup. in my opinion any out of the ordinary listlistness over sleeping, groggy, light fever or dribbling darker urine could be cause to to a test. going to the bathroom alot or/and not being able to and just a dribbling is sign also. if in doubt call the dr. a urine sample will tell all.

there are lots of threads about uti.
hope paul recovers and back home soon. divvi
