I want to pass along something my husband's neuro told me yesterday. Older daycare participants with dementia often have visual and auditory problems; consequently, they miss out, to some degree, on any commotion going on. This is actually a good thing for a dementia patient--they are less likely to become overstimulated and act out. However, someone with EOAD probably has no serious hearing or vision problems, so they are much more likely to become upset when it "all becomes too much". He felt that this issue was the cause of my husband's problems at prior daycares. So, if your spouse has EOAD and attends daycare, I would recommend discussing this issue with the staff to ensure that they are on the lookout and prepared to take action to avoid it (i.e., moving the person to a quiet area BEFORE a blowup occurs.) It is an accommodation that they need to be able to address, if they are going to serve younger clients.
