Does anyone here have PCA? My DH was diagnosed with this a little over two years ago. Some neurologists say its a variant of AD, others say its an entirely different disease. His neurologist is one who thinks its different. His eyesight and the eye/brain connection is not good. I don't know anyone else who has PCA.
Welcome Janie, I'm not sure I've ever heard of this BUT one of the difficulties DH has, is what the opthomologist called 'visual integration'. He has good eyesight but sometimes doesn't interpret what he's seeing correctly. I'm sure others who know much more will come along soon to offer more information.
Thanks for the welcome Judy. I don't "hope" anyone has PCA but I do hope if someone does they will see this post and maybe we can chat. I think part of my DH's problem is the eye to brain connection is just not working at times.
My DH has not been diagnosed with this, but I noticed recently if there is anything on the floor he steps over it with very high steps as if it is a raised object. A white line on the floor will cause him to lift his feet as high as possible to step over it. In the facility where he lives they have plug-ins in the floor and he is contantly trying to pick them up so people won't trip over them. They are flush with the floor. He also has trouble finding the food on his plate; he will try to scoop up food right next to where it actually is. He has cataracts, but I feel it is more likely a eye to brain transmission problem just like all the other problems.
Welcome Janie, we will all do what we can to help you find the info you need and provide lots of hugs and support. You've landed in a great spot here with this terrific "family" of caregivers.
Del, read the "understanding the dementia experience" which is ref'd on the left of Joan's front page. It is extremely helpful. She talks about the problems of depth perception, etc. Mine doesn't step over lines (step on a crack, break your mother's back) but he is quite concerned with manhole covers. I don't know if he thinks the car is going to fall into them or what, but he's always nervous when we're near one!
