Joan's blog today mentioned that Sid had a good time going to a casino and playing the slots. My DH used to love to gamble, I think he played craps. I've never enjoyed gambling; since the advent of AD, I've assumed it would be better to keep him out of the casino. But Joan's story made me reconsider--maybe the slot machines are a good solution? We have friends who go to Atlantic City frequently, and I've wanted to go, but let the fear of the casino and my DH hold me back. Anyone want to advise?

    Marilyn,

It's important for everyone to remember that this was a supervised trip by the Activities Director, who was well aware of Sid's situation. I would not advise taking someone with AD to a casino unless well supervised by you or someone else. ESPECIALLY if they think they can play the complicated games - that's a prescription for bankruptcy.

I'm pretty sure Sid knows he can't play the complicated card games anymore, so he stayed with the slots. I had given him $50, so he couldn't lose more than that.

Joan-glad it went well for Sid. Your move was a wise decision.

The last casino we went to was the one in Hollywood FL and DH had a ball. But this was just before the DX. He had $50 to spend and kept losing, then winning and he played for about 4 hours with that $50! I think now he would get very confused with all the noise and people, so don't think that's an option now.

Joan, so happy things went well with Sid. Your new place sounds really nice and convenient. Wish there was something similar where we are - that we could afford!

Ol Don, forgive me but I had to laugh out loud picturing your wifes card flying out of the machine. I love going to the casino on our park's trips. DH doesn't play anymore but is quite content sitting next to me watching.

Joan, I'm glad Sid has things to do now. I'm sorry he didn't win this time. Better luck next time. LOL

Funny, My DH used to love the casinos and as I was reading the blog I was thinking, oh we should go again. Then I remembered we have gone on the ships, and amazingly, he has absolutely no interest. He never played the slots, he used to play craps, and well enough that he won, very often. I guess now he knows he can't play the complicated games, and the slots never really grabbed him. I think when we cruise in October, I'll try again, to see if he'd like to play.

Chris R--We're going on a cruise on Oct. too, that's one of the reasons I asked about the casino. Where are you going?

Joan--I agree--I would only let him play the slots, and I'd be glued to his side. But actually, he might be like Chris' husband--no interest in the slots because that wasn't his thing.

there may come a time that those who like casinos will find the lights and sounds and movement and noises too much for AD. :(divvi

    so enjoy while you Can!

Good point Divvi. Recall the children in Japan who were having seizures from too many hours with certain wild flashy video games. Apparently it was determined that the flashing lights and movements caused the epilectic type seizures. I know the larger Las Vegas type casinos get my heart racing...So noisy!! with the clanging, audio speakers, and bright lights.
    I love it though!! (Grin)

Guess I'd do no good at casinos. Flashing lights bring on a migraine for me. I used to have to close my eyes when DH drove through the tunnels in Seattle.

I won't play the slots any more since you can't put coins into them.I like to feed coins and pull the arm. The whole time we lived in Nevada last year, we never played them. If the noise gets to some, in Nevada every store seems to have a few machines and it is quiet there because very few are playing at once.

My husband and I also liked the casinos. As he declined, we would pull 2 chairs together at the bar and play one video poker machine. He would pretty much just push the buttons I told him to push. (he used to be so sharp at this) Anyway he seemed to enjoy it and I know I did. Our last trip was a disaster. We were ready to leave and I needed to use the restroom first. I told him to stay at his seat at the bar and I'd be right back. Well...silly me he was nowhere to be found when I came back. Money was not an issue since he had none on him but I was frantic with worry. The thought of him wondering around that huge place alone and confused was horrible. I paged him several times and kept walking around comming back to the spot I left him. I finally went to security. They took his description and and sent people out looking. I kept circling the casino and checking the huge parking lot. On my way back in I ran into a friend and she took off to look too. She found him a short time later and we put our arms around each other and cried. It took 3 hours to find him and I vowed we never do anything like that again. My advice is to take along a friend or family member to accompany your lo to the restroom or to stay until you return. Never assume you can leave them alone even for a few minutes. cs

Oh CS what a horrible experience. When we go on vacations now, we always go with at least one other couple. And one of the first signs of Dick's disease was when he got lost in Santa Fe, NM. We were with friends even then, and the man drove up and down the strip til he found DH, wandering in the wrong direction. Of course he has no memory of that, but after that I was doubly vigilant. you can't trust that they will be where you left them, even for a minute.

i think the 'you cant trust them that they will be where you leave them, not even for a minute" should be in things i wish i'd have known. its absolutely HORRIFIC when you lose them like CS. i lost mine also the 'first time' while we were living in an apt while the house was being renovated due to mold. horror isnt the word. he was still 'with it' enough to leave and go out for abit, we went to the complex' gym to work out, i ran back to the apt for 2 waters and when i came back no DH working on the treadmill! i panicked, looked for about 10min then really panicked. not inside not outside, ran back to the apt not there. he was in shorts/tee and very hot outside. i broke down and called his family to come help look. over 30min and they showed up -we splitup to look, his grandson found him over a MILE away walking in the street going the opposite direction. he was very forlorn and tired, sweaty, and exhausted trying to find his way back. you just CANT trust them anywhere alone and count on them staying put. you dont want an experience like mine or CS or Chris. start early stay vigilant for your peace of mind. divvi

Chris, where are you going on your cruise? We're going in November to the Western Caribbean. We've been there before but any cruise is better than staying at home.
