Today is my 61st birthday. Yesterday on my way the the nursing home to visit Charlie I stopped by a dollar store and picked up a cheap card from a husband to a wife. I left it with the nurse and asked her to tell Charlie that since she knew he couldn't get out to shop that she had picked up a card for him to give me for my birthday. When I got to the nursing home the nurse went to Charlie's room to get him and he came out carrying the card with a huge smile on his face. He handed me the card, I fed him his dinner. I had taken two pieces of cake with me. I put a candle in one piece and the nurses and aides sang happy birthday (he made some humming noises while they sang). He continued smiling and we ate the cake. Did he know it was my birthday or did he think it was his? Who knows? That big smile was all the birthday present I needed.

Edis happy birthday. When my husband still had a faint inkling my daughter mailed a wrapped present to his facility so he could give me a birthday present.
Edis - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You are a wise and compassionate woman to think of such a thing. I will remember that in the future. I'm glad you got the smile and hope you had some other nice moments for your birthday. And you know once you past 60 you get to celebrate your birthday for 30 days! It's the truth. So here's to you!
Happy, happy birthday, dear Edis! That big smile on Charlie's face was the perfect gift! What a great pay off for such a small sacrifice on your part! It's things like this that make this site so invaluable. Thank you for sharing, Edis.
