There WAS a two story house in Williamsburg, Virginia in the restoration section that had a wonderful restaurant that had been there for more than 50 years (back in 1975) that had waiters who took your order by memory, kept your glasses filled, wore nice suits (had the napkin over the arm), and made you feel like a king and queen. And the food was 5 star quality - everything on the menu was excellent! Including their Baked Alaska and Cherries Jubilee prepared at the table (I always had a hard time choosing between the two!). I had to say "was" because it burned down and wasn't rebuilt. When we went there the last time to visit, we went down to where it had been to eat and discovered what had occurred. We both mourned the loss of our favorite restaurant.
Now, our favorite would be Antoine's in New Orleans. I guess I just love being treated like royalty and having the waiters remembering our orders without writing it down, and of course the food...(yum)! Oysters Rockefeller, Filet Mignon, etc. (I'd better stop now - I'm drooling!) Now, the last time we were there was pre-Katrina, so I don't know if it is still the wonder of a restaurant that it was before. I hope so!
Joe's Stone Crab in Miami. Been there for 93 yrears. They don't take reservations. More Rolls Roycees than I have ever seen. Out of these cars come creepy old men with their gorgious eye candy dripping with fur.
Didn't get to find a favorite here in Pennsylvania. In California our favorite was actually a restaurant in a hotel. We went there for the holiday buffets, for Thanksgiving and Easter. We went there for wonderful wine tasting dinners. My husband was the wine gourmet; I was there for the food! And once in a while we just went there.
A few years ago we went to a restaurant at the Ventana Resort in Big Sur, CA. It was all glass and somehow cantilevered over the water--the food was very good, the surroundings, spectacular!
I agree on Joe's Stoned Crab in Miami, The Breakers in Palm Beach, and in Baltimore, The Prime Rib. Years ago we went to Spago in L.A., didn't see what all the fuss was about.
Agreed about Joe's Stoned Crab in Miami! I had forgotten it - but lived and went to school in Miami in the 50's! Joe's was a real treat when we got to go! Fantastic.
marilyn our annual holliday party was always at The Breakers'. In the lobby every year would be a walk-in sized gingerbread house with the recipe posted in case you were comfortable dealing with 100# bags of sugar and flour.
Bluedaze--I guess you never made the recipe? We went to a wedding held at The Breakers and stayed there for the weekend. Fri. eve. was the rehearsal dinner, Sat, nite, the black tie wedding. It was not to be believed! The flowers were done by Oprah's florist (can't remember his name), after the ceremony, a million dollars worth of fireworks were set off outside (yes, you read that right).
Jeanette don't forget there was a snake in the garden of eden. Many years ago The Breakers was shut down for several days when many guests became very ill with e-coli which was later traced to imported berries.
Hey from the new hot place for restaurants..Portland, Or..who would have known? Every foodie magazine has some new great place here to tout. We feel it is very funny as more than once the hot new restaurant that is in a magazine has already shut down here. We do have great restaurants, but hard to enjoy under our circumstances. We go out for lunch once a week..always at someplace special, but G makes such a mess eating it is becoming a real problem to eat out. Why is this??? He can't eat without spilling everything on the floor or in his lap. At home our pup loves it, but in a restaurant? Oh well. I have been told I run the best restaurant in town, but that is getting old in a hurry. ;-(
I'm trying to remember what restaurants are. It's been so long since we have eaten out that any place that I can sit down and have food brought to me is my favorite restaurant. Feeling sorry for poor ole me today.
With me it's the opposite; If I want to stay home for a meal I have to think of something good to have and tempt dh with it. He would absolutely prefer to go out for EVERY meal (including breakfast). Doesn't say much for my talent as a cook which he used to be quite contented with. We have a small repertory of places we go again and again; he doesn't want to try new places unless we are with friends. I'm afraid I'll miss this in the future so better take advantage of it now. Expensive, but I'm comparing it to what we might otherwise have spent on some sightseeing travel this year: which isn't happening.
Mary....Hot dogs are good but the in place to eat in Tuscaloosa is DreamLand. It is a couple of miles from the stadium in a depresssed looking area. They only serve bbq ribs (cooked in the back) white bread slices, and sweet tea with a roll of paper towels as napkins. It has been several years since I was there and they may have added to the menu. All the sportscasters from the networks who broadcasts the game on TV usually ate there and discussed it during the games. It was good and messy so you needed the paper towels. We have a good restaurant here that is known for their orange rolls as well as their steaks. It has been here for over 60 years.
Bama, some of us who enjoyed the 'finer dining' out privedeges before AD have found that almost ALL restaurants will do a take out order. you can call any of your fav restaurants and you can go pick it up and bring it home to eat if you cant go inside. dont you have some respite hrs now -i remember you saying you would? so have a nice lunch out! i do it all the time and if i have DH in tow and dont want to go inside we pick it up and bring it home. its all quite practical! delivery is also available if you are within their service area at some -divvi
divvi...I do pick up take out orders sometimes. When it starts getting dark earlier I can't do that. I don't drive after dark any more and we have always had dinner around seven. It's heck getting old but it beats the alternative. I do have respite 4 hours on Tuesday and Friday and as soon as I catch up on all the things that need to be done I am going to call a good friend and set up a date for lunch.
Our fav is Ramono's Macaroni Grill and we ate there tonite, for my hubby's 64th birthday...I handed our server a "we are dealing with Alzheimer's" card and she did VERY well with us. I am having to feed my hubby more & more & that's the way it went tonite @ the restaurant, but it works for us! We had a pretty good day...He got several phone calls from friends & my family...no call or card from either of his grown children...very sad to me, but whatever. I got him some new shorts & a couple of golf shirts because he's lost so much weight & now wears MEDIUM instead of LARGE. Also, a cookie with his initial "C" on it...he really liked that ALOT! We also had ICE CREAM CAKE, which is his favorite! YUM!! All in all, a very nice day indeed.
Hi all, I grew up in Key West, Florida so my favorite is "El Siboney". It is a small hide away restaurant that all the locals go to. It is located at 900 Catherine St. if you are ever in Key west and want to try some of the best Cuban food you will ever eat.
Chili's, Mexican (a couple favorites), Shari's Fast food: Burger King Whopper, Wendy's fries, Panda Express; Subway; Carl's/Green Burritos 'taco salad'
While we have the usual fast food chains here in Maine - MacDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton - I prefer the local restaurants. For every day there's the Riverside Cafe, Jasper's, Marlintini's, or Helen's. For more upscale food we have Arborvine, The Blue Moose, Cleonice, or Table-a Farmhouse Bistro.
I can't think of any reason to leave Maine looking for good food. I haven't even mentioned the numerous lobster places, although Jasper's serves "Lobster 12 Ways".
My sons love Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and we manage to celebrate some occasion there each time we get together. One son chose it for his Wedding Rehearsal Dinner. For seafood, Galveston,Tx. has the best!... but Uncle Bubba's in Savannah GA is good too. Great Shrimp!!! He's Paula Deen's brother. Yummy Key Lime Pie there. We cannot leave out P.F. Chang's for the best Chinese in the world!!!
YES, P.F. Chang's! We have one here in Virginia, in Richmond (actually in Shortpump...and we have a Ruth's Chris steak house in Charlottesville). When we lived in central Florida, we used to love a place called the Cattleman's steakhouse. Sawdust on the floor, steak was the specialty, of course. There was a 22 oz. steak (or was it 42 oz.?) that if you ate the whole thing, with baked potato and salad, you got your name engraved on the entrance board and you didn't have to pay for it. I don't know of many people who did it....and there was a time limit , too. God, I'd love to go out to eat at a real restaurant again!!! SOMEBODY ASK ME OUT!!! ( I'll wash your car for you )
How could I have left out Matt's El Rancho ...The best Mexican food in Texas. I can remember my children sitting in high chairs at their original location...and now my GREAT Grandaughter sits in a high chair at the current El Matt's. My favorite dish is Taco Compuesto with Shrimp. Like a crispy flat tortilla, rancho or green sauce, cheese and shrimp... Second your nomination, Weejun!
Applebees! Locally. Wendys if I've got the dogs; I get a small chocolate frosty; they share a burger. And Culvers Frozen Custurd if I'm in the Midwest. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Maybe I'll head to the fridge and get a Slimfast...
Well, we eat out almost not at all except occasionally for sushi - or get takeout. The takeout at Whole Foods is good. On the island one little cafe has a BYOP day every week - you bring in your own plate (or they give you one and you return it whenever) and they fill it with food for $15. One night I had a whole half chicken breast on a good rice with dijon cream sauce and a side of good fresh veggies; another night it was excellent barbecued ribs with corn muffin and coleslaw.
Briegull, I'm inclined to send you a plate....for ME. The chicken breast with dijon cream sauce sounds wonderful.. Recently, I bought a small jar of a French Dijon mustard at a little French restaurant, and it is simply divine. I could eat it with a spoon. It's from Dijon, France, of course. When I was in Dijon, we went to a market and I bought about fifteen little jars of various kinds of mustard blends. Stupid me. Our rule is "If you buy it, you carry it". That mustard got heavier and heavier. The customs people laughed at my two tall wine shaped bottles (not of wine! but of wonderful Olive Oil from Umbria in Italy) and all my delicious jars of mustard.
Jeanette, Yes, there is a Texas Roadhouse in Toledo on Airport Highway.By the way the Apple Festival in Oak Harbor is coming soon.Do you live in Ohio too?
