There was to be a segment on the Today Show this morning about a new study that shows that a Mediterranean Diet reduces the probability of developing Alz by 60 %. I missed it & would like to know if anyone saw it & if you thought the study was well founded. I'm all for prevention. (Especially for myself!)

Yes I have been trying to follow the Mediterranean style of eating every since my cholestrol made big bubbles on my eye lids. The statins have too many side effects. I still have the bubbles but my levels are falling. I did not know until today about the prevention of AD. OF course DH eats anything in reach that is not nailed down.

Kitty-if you Google Mediterranean diet the entire article is there-too long to post

I saw something a few weeks ago about that. Also the people who eat goat cheese and milk have a lower incident of AD. Of course, they basically vegetarians. They eat lots of herbs that naturally grow in their hillside community along the roads and such. Reminded me of as a child during the summer the garden is where we snacked all the time.

Basically, the advantages of a heart healthy Mediterranean Diet, which focuses on vegetables, fruits and fish, is that it lowers cholesterol. They are concentrating on the correlation between cholesterol's affect on blood vessels and the possible effect it has on the brain's blood vessels. I've never eaten anything in that diet program that I didn't LOVE, but DH won't eat fish...period! Shrimp is NOT good for us, shellfish is high in cholesterol. He would eat shrimp 7 days a week if he had the option. (me too!, but I know better!)

The South Beach Diet is basically a Mediterranean Diet,

Oh, interesting. I have the South Beach Diet Book, I think my son gave it to me. I'll check it out.

Kitty, the South Beach diet book was written by a doctor, If I am not mistaken, he was a cardiologist!

I know that is how I should eat all the time..having just finished a huge take out MEXICAN FOOD dinner. I can promise you that not one thing I ate was on the South Beach Diet...nor was it anything like a Mediterranean Diet. groan.

Lois grows so many fresh vegetables in her garden and puts them up for the year. She has such a great diet program, naturally, she'll live forever! (grin)

Ol don, they first came up on the upper lid both eyes. They are above the tear duct, look like white scars but when you look closely they are individual bubbles. Now there are two on both lower lids. They are call xanthamas. Not sure bout that spelling. In some people they come out on the upper arms. It is an excess of cholestorol and instead of depositing the fatty stuff in the liver it finds places on the skin like the eyelids and the upper arms. I thought I had skin cancer and went to the dermatologist only to be told it was an internal problem. They get larger and smaller, and I am very self concious about them but not enough to pay for laser removal which is vain. It is costly and causing bruising for 2 weeks not to mention they can come back again. Also I am not comfortable with having a laser that close to my eyes.

Nancy, thanks for the comment about my healthy eating habits but I am afraid I also indulge in things I shouldn't. However, this summer with all the fresh veggies and fruits available locally I have been doing better. I know I should
avoid fast-food places more but husband loves fast food so the fact that I don't have to cook, makes it a easy choice for me. I am happy to report I have lost 5# over the past month. That is a start, now looking for the next 5#.
