When I opened my computer this am and went on the internet, my internet screen does not fully fit my monitor screen. The left margin has a 1/2" of black and my red X at the top right is nearly invisible. If I open anything else, the x is invisible and I cannot close out the item. I can only minimize it. What happened? How do I fix this? As you all can tell, I'm not very computer savy-happy when I can open my internet and surf. HELP> Thanks
Before you do anything more complicated, QUIT IE. Then SHUT DOWN, by choosing Start in the lower left corner of the screen and choosing SHUT DOWN (not sleep or hibernate or restart). When it is completely shut down, then open it and hit the start button. This may do it.
This is for Windows XP.
I don't quite understand: does this happen with microsoft Word or other applications, or just the internet? Do you have a laptop?
Charlotte, do you remember what it is that centers the window on the screen?
Briegull, I have a regular desktop with XP. What is Quit IE? I am definately not a techno person but unless it is to be typed, I don't see "Quit IE' anywhere on my keyboard. Sorry I'm asking a dumb question but I am better at learning visually. Thanks for helping everyone.
Kathryn, what she means is to close Internet Explorer (IE). Then click on the "Start" button on the computer screen and then the little right arrow that is at the bottom of the page that pops up, then click on "Shut Down".. wait 5 minutes and start the computer up again. Then click on the Internet Explorer icon and it should open correctly. If not, ask us again and we'll try for something else.
If you can't see the "x" in the upper right corner, hit the Ctrl key and then the X on the keyboard (sorta ta-DUM rhythm). That will quit it. Or pull down the menu under File in the upper left corner and choose "exit" at the bottom.
I did close down the computer and waited all afternoon (had to go out) and rebooted it tonight. Still there. I really hate it when you have computer problems. I wish I could just drag my curser over to the left to try to move it back (I actually did try this!!-pretty silly) but no go. Briegull, I can barely see the X but there is enough to close out the main page on my internet explorer. If I open anything from here, I get no x box. Thanks
Right now, my IE window is about 3/8" in from the left of the screen, just under 1/4" from riight, and 1/8" from the shrinky bar (my term). Next to the red X box(Close) at the top right corner is a single box within a box (Maximize), and then a box with a dash line (Minimize).. If I click the Maximize box the IE window fills the whole screen. I can also drag the boundaries to the edge of the screen with the cursor. Next time I open the IE window will come up like it is now. Doesn't bother me. Maybe what I do will help someone else.
If you can see the "start" at the bottom, then to the right of that you see the windows that are open. Put the cursor on the window description at the bottom that you want to close and right click. When the menu pops up, left click on "close".
If maximizing the window does not work, try to restore to a previous day. The other option would be to download Firefox and see if it does the same. IE just had a big security update yesterday. I wonder if that had something to do with it? I stopped using IE once it got to IE7 - it kept crashing. Will never go back.
Also, with Firefox when a word is misspelled it will appear with a red line under it. To correct the spelling I just right click and spelling options come up.
I just realized that when I rebooted my computer that the desktop screen does not fill my monitor. It is 1/2" from the left side. The margin is blank. Is there a way to move the desktop screen over to the3 left?
Kathryn, is this a separate monitor? There is probably a wheel somewhere on it or some buttons where you can click on them to move the screen left or right. I agree re Firefox, but even easier you might try Chrome (google Chrome and the first line is Install Google Chrome). However, these are browsers and it sounds like this may be on any program you try to open. Solitaire?? A word processing doc?? so changing browsers wouldn't help.
Unfortunately, this is one of those things you kinda have to have someone look at, it's so hard to describe. I agree if you can do a restore to a few days before (Start/All Programs/Accessories/System/Backup and choose Backup to Earlier Point - but Frank, check me on this; I don't have my PC in front of me) that might help. Also, can you find a neighbor kid? They always know how to fix these things.
