We're home. Except for L. being really tired tonight - and me too! -– it couldn't really have been much better. Started off badly, to be sure, with a motel which had too narrow a door for the walker to go through, too low a toilet to sit on comfortably, and absolutely NO way for him to take a shower. J. and I slept in one bed and he snored and cussed and had sleep apnea in the other. Then getting him onto the boat was a terrible pain, but the dear deck hands did it, and getting him into the cart to go from the dock to the house was also awful.
BUT THEN!!! all went well. He quickly learned where the toilet was, he found a comfy chair to sit in, and he learned to come down from the deck onto the grass and thence onto the golf cart. AND HE LOVED IT!!! Two days ago I took him with me to go to the laundromat, which he enjoyed, then we came home, had lunch and watched a Poirot - then he said, what can we do now? And I said, well, would you like to go for a bye-bye-cart? He said THAT would be very nice!! So we went over to the friend's house where the wifi is, and he watched the ducks and gulls in the pond while I read email.
Friends visited, he remembered them, from years ago. He talked cogently about all kinds of things. Slept well at night, downstairs while I was upstairs. It was amazing. People were very kind and sweet to him (and to me), my son and his wife and daughter and her friend were over for supper, the weather was mostly okay. And when I got home, although totally exhausted with my leg really giving me hell, all the cats were fine. I would say that my leg, not my husband, was the real problem on the trip. And our daughter was the real gem. I can't tell you how helpful and dear she was.
We enjoyed meeting Marsh and family so much! We got a nice family here!
Sounds like a winner--so glad things went well. Isn't it funny the things we can appreciate more now that our lives have changed? I bet your enjoyment was more special now than it would have been years ago, doing the same things.
Clare, I am so glad that you had such a wonderful time. Someday when I have time (ha, yes, maybe that will happen) I will tell you about MY experience on the island. Not quite like yours, lol. Welcome home. Arms around and around, S
Briegull, it's wonderful that the vacation turned out well for both of you. "If he ain't happy. you ain't happy". And it sounds like he really enjoyed the stay there. I hope your leg is feeling better.
Susan, when I first started going out I told a friend about it and he said he and his wife had gone out there over a labor day weekend to patch up their relationship. A hurricane came in and they were stuck in the hotel the whole time. The marriage broke up, and he HATES the place. My DIL let me take the girls around a place or two but she said she didn't want to get dragged out on walks.. I got a taste of all this when my leg really acted up so that I didn't go anywhere much except on the golf cart. Because I've been all over before now, I don't mind the quiet days spent reading by the fire. But I can well understand why people wouldn't like it. For me, though, it's my particular spot.
Briegull, I'm so happy you had a great time and that your husband did as well! I hope your leg heals soon! It's been a long time. Have you checked with the doctor to see if there is something else he can do to help you?
He gave me the synvisc shots, which might well have worked if I hadn't fallen and hit my knee again. I'm doing everything I can to get better - resting, icing, heating, no lifting (that's what REALLY damages it) and losing weight. All the opposite of what I like to do!
