This may sound terrible but you don't have to change them whenever they're wet. Neither does day care. If he poops, yes, but otherwise, these things are very heavy duty compared to the disposable diapers when our kids were young. They absorb a great deal. My husband puts on a pair in the morning and it isn't changed until night unless he poops. I make sure that the whole area the "whitie" covers (our euphemism for Depends) is carefully washed and dried every morning, and we have had, in almost 2 years, one brief outbreak of "diaper rash", quickly controlled with good ol' Desetin cream. He doesn't smell either.
Guards didn't work for him. They kept turning down and sticking to all the wrong places!
THe only time mine's daytime pee gets, er, out of hand, is when he has decided to go to the bathroom, pulls down his trousers, pulls his penis out, forgets what he's doing, pulls his trousers back up. Then pees. This has happened more than once. For some, partic. at night, it's better to have them aiming down, esp. if you have a booster pad in.
Can someone come up w/a clever ditty for this. Like, you know, to remember which direction to fasten or unfasten things: righty-tighty; lefty-loosy? Step up talent.
forgive me for the graphics here but ifyou want the pads and boosters to work you have to make sure the apparatus is aiming DOWN into the pads. if its up the pee comes out the top! and will wet the shirt or run down over the depend and front of pants. from my experience it must always be DOWN into the heaviest par tof the pad. i think the men will agree the normal position is DOWN! kadee make sure yo position the booster up high enough to where the whole apparatus is 'covered. not in just the bottom of the depend- its works like it should when its all in place. now the catch 22 is if they get the sensation to pee and want to finigle with the apparatus and change it to pointing up like at daycare you are going to get wet pants. when they try to go to the bathroom obviously the best way is to make sure its still down when they come out. i doubt caregivers at daycare will make this happen. further problem is if he wont let anyone change him but you. you are going to need to try to get him to accept help that isnt always you. otherwise you will be running to daycare to pick up early or he will be wet while there. kadee it may be worth it go have an aide from an agency to come once a week to help out at home to help get him used to someone else helping. one more thing ify ou are using the tena new mens BRIEF they may not be as absorbant as the reg style tena pullup or depends. try a depends good fit and a tena booster in it to see? divvi
The urge to say something inappropriately humorous here is overwhelming, but I don't want my message board monitor censoring ME, so I'll just smile and shut up.
divvi, He is wearing the Super Plus Absorbency Brief, it's the one in the Navy & Orange package. Maybe I am not getting the guard high enough. His penis is always pointing down.
geez then kadee i dont know what else to suggest other than a good fit around the legs. if its loose it can leak from there too. i bought the medium instead of smalls to try in tenas and they leaked around the leg area as it was too big for DH thigh area-went back to smalls that fit tighter and works much better- maybe try a reg depend over the whole tena/booster as well at home to see if that helps. and raise the booster pad some so its more in the front. good luck-its trial and error to find what works best !divvi
Maybe they are to large, I bought size medium. They are 34 waist & that is what he is. He has larger thighs. After his shower tonight I put on the Tena, a guard & a Depend that I had brought before the Tena's also moved the guard up more. And made sure he was pointing down.
You just have to try different ones. Tena does not fit mine; the Walmarts brand fits best (conveniently, the cheapest!) But they leak, no matter what. My routine is to go in early in the morning with the paper, turn the light on low, and sit quietly and read for an hour or so. Somewhere in there I hear him start to cuss. I thought he was waking up mad - finally I realized he was just peeing without being able to stop it. If he gets up before he cusses, he hasn't leaked all over the bed, but then he's cranky because he hasn't slept enough.
well we tell it like it is, right briegull?? hahah... too funny. kadee i hope this is the magicbullet for you -you have done it all right. if all else fails get some of the sanipants (medical supply) that are plastic to go over his pullups for daycare. it will keep the wetness in the pant and off his clothes but he will be wet until you change him - i still use these when i go out with DH to ensure no wet clothing or poop in car:) xxx fingers for yo kadee. divvi
Remember how you always carried a diaper bag where ever you went when the kids were infants? I did the same thing when I went out with dh. Didn't carry a bag with me, but I did keep a bag in the car. There was a complete change of clothes along with a couple of depends in it also a pair of socks. I only used it one time and was glad I had it that time.
My DW is incontinent and wears Depends with an extra absorbent pad a night with an additional water proof pad on the bed as well. That all works fine except when she uses the toilet, she urinates on and under the seat, all over the floor and her slacks if she is dressed. I know this isn’t much of a problem compared to what many of you ladies go through with your LO but it is getting very tiring cleaning up so many times a day. Does anyone have a solution to this situation?
Jerry, your wife is probably having a problem getting the slacks down far enough to correctly position herself on the toilet. A skirt would be easier, but who wears skirts anymore? Sorry I don't have any better ideas.....
I agree that a skirt makes things easier. That's why I dress my wife in a loose dress - easy to get on, easy to use the toilet, easy to change Depends, easy to get off.
Jerry---I am the caregiver here, but because my own disability I wear loose sundresses with a short-sleeved shirt under during warm weather and similarly styled demin, twill, or flannel jumpers with long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, or swearshirts underthem in cold weather. So much easier to get skirt up out of the wy and undies down over braces sufficiently. Even pull up pants can roll and npot slide down easily and if the chlothes aren't down far enough accidents happen. (shirts are to prevent chafe under arms from crutches).
Jerry. With my DH I have to make sure he is on the toilet seat properly and his penis is out and aiming downward otherwise pee goes everywhere. Then I have to have him move up so that he can poop. Sorry to be so descriptive. Your wife probably needs help to make sure she is sitting on the pot properly with the pants way down. They can't seem to do it for themselves. One day I was getting DH ready to take a shower when all of a sudden he was peeing on the floor (thank goodness we were in the bathroom). All I could do was watch and wait. Now I have to make sure he pees before we shower or change clothing.
I was reading one of Jane's earlier responses regarding DHP home delivery company. Are these better than using two Depends at night? What is the advantage?
I also use vinegar and have for years. I put some in every wash load. I also use it to rinse floors. It's pretty cheap but a good disenfectent as gets rid of smells.
Jerry, Marsh and I have both found that National has good cheap "housedresses" (look for shopnational), loose, pull over the head things. I sleep in them too, Marsh's wife lives in them. You also might want to look for a toilet riser - not a detatchable thing but one that screws in between the toilet seat and the toilet. There are "comfort seats" I think they are called which are whole toilets that are higher, but I've found this, which you can get thru Amazon, works very well. My husband has a lot of trouble sitting way down on a toilet seat, bec. of his arthritis, as do I, and that really helps. Might speed her up getting down.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm not sure she would like the "house dresses" but will think about giving it a try. Our toilets are already the high models (thinking ahead when we built this house after we retired six years ago). All is well if I supervise her but I don't always know when she goes into the bathroom.
Well I got the Depends maximum briefs yesterday. I bought two packages as it is not convenient to get up and go shopping as you all can appreciate. Last night I opened the package and was so disappointed in the material used. It is not like the other Depends (or other disposables). More plastic and you have to tape them on the sides. They were supposed to hold up to 5 cups of urine. I did not use anything else to see what would happen. This morning DH was just as wet as before and so was the bed. I don't recommend spending the extra money. I contacted Kimberly-Clark and asked them to check this website to see what people are dealing with. What I will do is cut off the plastic and use them as boosters. I'm sure DH will be a lot more comfortable.
Jerry. I have a condition that makes it extremely uncomfortable to wear pants of any kind and I found the National and Blair websites for the loungewear dresses. The ones I have I just wash and hang out to dry. Unfortunately, they don't come in petit sizes so are long on me. You might want to watch the ads now that Spring/Summer clothes are out in the stores. You might find something you can use and she will feel comfortable in as well.
I use the porta potty for our bathroom for my DH so he has handles to hold onto and also use the splash guard part so that I can raise the seat up (my husband is 6'1") and it is easier for him to get up and down.
brindle, I use the tape on Depends with 2 Tena overnight pads in them. I then use a pull up like he wears in the daytime which seems to help. I then put on a pair of vinyl waterproof pants over that. There are morning when his pajamas are wet and the pad on the bed. I use a quilted waterproof bed pad that goes across the bed and tucks under the mattress. I found them in a Dr. Leonard's catalog. The twin pad is $14.99 and the full/queen is $17.99. I ordered 2 and have been very pleased with them. If you want to check this out go to www.drleonards.com. I am going to check out the porta potty. Thanks
I have previously mentioned the Tranquility Premium Overnight Briefs which have worked very well for us. Only rarely does she wet the pad I have under her, and then not much. It has been months since I have had to wash the sheets due to leakage. Apparently some of you are concerned about the price - $82 for 72 briefs. This comes to $1.18 per night. Depends cost me $.85 per brief and she will go through 2-4 per day. If you are using 2 Depends at night this costs more than using the Overnight brand. My only concern would be whether or not the Overnight would work as well for men. I would like to hear from someone who has tried it. You can get the Overnight brand from the Alzheimer Store. The link to it is on the right side of joang's home page - click on incontinence.
Jerry, If you don't like to iron don't get the cotton house dresses or whatever they want to call them. I ordered 2 from National and washed them before I tried to wear them. I knew they would be big on me and was hoping they would shrink. I couldn't believe the wrinkles when I took them out of the dryer and they have been in my closet ever since. I don't mind SOME ironing but these were just too much for me!
For comfort, I thought I'd try the pad in his regular underwear. that did not work, as in the morning, the underwear, pad and pajamas were laid carefully on the walker, and the bed needed changing. All righty then, back to depends, or whatever, disposibles. I do notice they are not the most comfortable things in the world, but at this point, they only get really wet at night. during the day he goes to the bathroom, but not always without some dampness coming out first. (dribbling) I agree, you don't need to change the depends during the day, just before bed, and in the morning. So right now, 2 a day is not bad.
I get sleeveless ones, preferably with patch pockets (not pockets set in the side seam) from Anthony Richards or WomanWithin, in poly-cottomn blend. Washer, dryer, wear. Add various short sleeved shirts under as a comfort because of crutch tops rubbing. I have also found pure cotton to be more wrinkly, unless pulled out and hung imme3diately after drying.
I really don't like the overnight briefs from Depends. I've been cutting off the sides then putting an opening on the botton and using them as an insert to the pull ups. Last night I used 2 overnights in the pull up and still a wet T-shirt and pad. So much urine! This can't really be comfortable wearing all of that. I sent for some samples from a company called HDIS (it was an ad in the Sunday paper). They are going to send me some samples. I know there must be some way of keeping our loved ones dry, but it is still trial and error. One morning, I almost jumped for joy when I found DH had not wet the pads at all!!!! Daytime is not too bad because I get him to the toilet about every 3 hrs. Sometimes he looks at me as if I were crazy (you want me to do what?!). At those times I just bypass the idea. Some long naps cause some wetting. I use the plastic baggies from the market every morning to dispose of the wet disposable products and into the big trash so I don't have to smell anything.
Marsh..The overnight briefs arrived yesterday, I tried one last night and I added an overnight Tena pad plus his everyday pull ups over that. Then I added vinyl pants . This morning he was wringing wet. So tonight he gets 2 pads in the bottom and one pad across the top. That was what I was using with the flat Depends with the tapes. He doesn't say they are uncomfortable altho he waddles like a duck with them on. Brindle...His butt is as smooth as a baby's. I just make sure I sponge his bottom every morning. He is wearing the Tena pullups during the day and he either goes to the bathroom or tells me he needs to go.
Thanks for being our guinea pig, Bama. I've been watching for your report! So the "rubber pants" work okay? I think I'm about ready to get some. I, too, am really tired of all the laundry!
I keep a package of the ones with tapes (which I HATE) and use them occasionally because sometimes he gets his pants dirty and when I remove the pull ups (by tearing the sides), I'm able to put on the tape one without having to worry about getting his shoes and trousers off and back on, which are a major annoyance for us both. Then at night I change him back to the pullups.
The new briefs with 3 Tena Overnight Pads plus the vinyl pull ups didn't work so it's back to the flat Depends and 3 pads tonight. Most nights they work. Briegull, I tried Walmart Assurance brand but they did not do as well as the Depend brand. I think it was because they (Walmart) were longer through the crotch area and my DH is short. I do have to use his Tenas that he wears during the day on top of the Depends since they tend to sag and the Tena pull ups help keep them up. Oh, the tricks we use trying to keep a dry bed. My DH would die if he knew his peeing problems were being discussed.
As my DH usually sleeps on one side, that is the side that really gets wet. Yes, I make sure his penis is down (when it is not hidden). I tried the Depends overnights and put a hole in the bottom so excess would flow through to the pull ups. I put tranquility pads on front, sides and bottom. Funny thing was the pull ups were dry but my DH was still wet in the A.M.
Got some samples but they don't look any better than Depends. Now I have an issue with him wetting even during the day. He does not let me know if he needs to pee anymore and if I ask, he looks at me as if he doesn't know what I am talking about (and he probably doesn't anymore).
I use a scissors in the morning and cut them off rather than pulling the pullups apart as they are so very wet and scissors are easier and easy to wash off. Then I fill the sink with warm water and bathe off the urine (the throw in the undershirt to rinse). A&D white ointment is good and I have tried the Monkey Butt powder that smells nice and seems to also work at keeping the skin ok.
brindle, try putting the holes in the pads not the depends. Someone here suggested putting a pad across the top of the depends and I found this really helps. It also covers the tops of the pads that I put in the bottom of the depends and that way he is more comfortable. My DH sleeps on his side also and some nights he never turns over and that was the side that was so wet. I finally got smart and put the pads up front instead of trying to center them in the middle. My DH is probably stage 6 but he is still continent during the day. By the way, I have had 5 nights that he stayed dry. How great is that????????/
