My DH has not been able to shave himself or brush his teeth for awhile now. Brushing his teeth has worked fine since I switched from an electic toothbrush to an old fashioned one. He just bites my finger periodically but so far no real injuries. I purchased a Baun electric razor and to shave him and he says it hurts him. I don't shave him every day so his facial hair starts to get long. Can you recommend an electric razor for me that will cut the hairs and not pull or yank them?
My DH has always used Norelco and he now has 3 of them. He sometimes complains of them pulling. I tried 2 new ones and he complained on both so he is using them. I thought a pre-shave lotion might help but haven't bought one yet. My son used one of his shavers this morning and commented on how good a job it did so makes me wonder if it is DH imagination.
Before I re-grew the beard, I used a Norelco for years. Even it will pull whiskers that get too long, like more than 3 days or so. Works great on my legs, though. Just kidding! LOL
I'm just letting Jim's beard grow. When it get too long, he finally shaves it. When he stops, I guess I could take him to the barber shop. Do they still do shaves? He said he wanted to grow a pony tail, grow a beard, and get a tatoo across his chest of an Eagle with an American Flag! Yikes, he's gone back to the 60's and the Vietnam War Era! LOL
I've had that problem also. When I use an electric razor I can't seem to get them all and DH complains that I'm hurting him. I do use the electric pre-shave. Don't know if it helps. Maybe I'm letting the whiskers get too long in between shaves. He tends to look pretty ratty when I'm done. Lately, I've been using a regular razor with the shave cream and all. Seems to do a better job but he ends up with razor burn or something. Over our camping weekend I asked the males in the group for some tips. One thing mentioned was the number of blades. I just thought the more the better, but they told me maybe 3 would be okay, and maybe with 5 they were just too close together. Wish I had a good answer.
As for the teeth brushing, I use a small childs' toothbrush and also the extra thin Dentek brushes to do between his teeth rather than try to floss. I've found it is easier to do his teeth when he is lying down.
DianeT ....... my husband is also able to do little for himself but what I do as far as shaving is concerned is I hand him his electric razor, already turned on, its also a Braun and he stands in front of the bathroom mirror running it over his face - while he's doing that I make the bed. This gives him the feeling of being able to do something for himself. When I've finished making the bed I take the razor and just clean up anywhere he's missed .... often its a lot of places .... LoL!!
I do find that shaving every day only takes a few minutes and eliminates having to do a BIG job of shaving every three days or so ....... you might want to trying shaving every day - it would lessen the load for you to have to deal with and maybe eliminate any pulling of whiskers.
I recently replaced the shaving head and its like having a new razor.
The only problem I've run into having my husband shave himself is that he also suffers from Parkinson's Disease so naturally there is significant jerking, plus his eye sight isn't good sooooooo most times we have one sideburn shaved off:)
My husband had a lovely beard most of the time the kids were growing up so that's all they ever knew. When he was on a psych unit daughter and I visited and couldn't find him. He had shaved off his beard and looked like a different person. Of course he couldn't explain why.
The last time my DH shaved himself with the electric razor he ran it over the entire side of his head yelling that it was hurting and taking out a big swath of hair. Took me forever to clean the razor. :-)
I'm getting some ideas here. Thank You. I think I will try replacing the head first. If that doesn't work, I can replace the razor. They are expensive! I'm getting that we need to up the frequency. I work all day so the best time would be to have a shave in the evening. I will try giving him the 'running razor and let him shave and then do the clean up. It will help keep him active. I've never tried the electric pre-shave but it is worth a try. As always, this is a great group.
I've tried in the past to find a good barber shop that does a hot towel shave.....nothing doing. seems that's a very rare service. So, the best I can do is to give him a regular shave (with shaving cream and a razor) when I have him in the bath tub every other day. When he'll cooperate. Yes, the electric razors, even the expensive ones with the built in 'baths' for the cutting blades don't work very well. Especially on a two or three day growth of beard. Never as good as a real razor shave, either. Smooooooooooth.
Shaving every day will help. The longer you wait the more it will pull and the more difficult to get a clean shave. I have a Remington Microscreen rechargeable shaver (from Walmart) that I use when I'm in a hurry because I can shave in the car.
I prefer a disposable razor with shave cream for a cleaner shave that looks good longer. I personally prefer the Bic disposable razor with two blades, they have a green tapered hollow handle. they tend to get dull pretty fast, though, so I need to use a new one every 3 or 4 days; otherwise they will pull. It takes a while for face to get used to a shaving method no mater what you do. The electric pre-shave lotion might help, I don't use it but my son does. If you are shaving with a razor it might help to put a hot wet towel on the face to soften the beard before lathering. That's what the barbers would do, you may have seen it in old movies.
Where would we be without those small pieces of toilet paper stuck on all the cuts we get from shaving....I use an electric shaver (Norelco), for a quick shave, But nothing beats shaving with cream and a razor. And it seems that the older you get, the faster your beard grows...I really hate shaving, but hate the sandpaper feeling if I don't shave.
I can't see my ears, so I have someone braid it. Nose hairs, I use the trimmer cutter on my electric razor...but there are some nasal hair manual cutters, but I never tried them. If all fails, get someone to braid those I guess....
I'm starting to understand why so many men sport mustaches: It's a real "bear" to shave the upper lip and under the nose!!!! My DH wore one all the years I've known him until about a year ago.
My sister would give her husband the electric razor - he could only shave one side due to his stroke. She did the other side.
There is a barber in Chappell, Nebraska that has a sign that reads: "only old fashioned hair cuts and shaves given here. Anything else, go to the beauty shop". You can get your shaves done there.
My husband use to have an electric razor where he could use shaving creme with it. They still make them, so if you can find them they might work better than dry.
My DH says it hurts his face when he shaves, regardless of method. And, there are lots of places around here that do the hot towel-shave, although they can be pricey. Pat
I use a Norelco with a cord. (no cordless) and that way I always get a powerful machine. I also change the blades at least once a year. They get dull also. The beard must by dry--for sure. The pre-shave lotion might help some but I find that the best time to shave is when I get up in the morning, before I start sweating or my skin gets oily. I have also found that the motion should be slow rather than jerky. Feel the way the beard lays and go back and forth in that direction. It is usual to do cheeks from chin to ears-----slowly. Under chin is best back and forth with some up and down. I never use a circular motion.
I shave about every day or 3. Always a lather and blade on sunday. I also shave my bald spot perimiter to keep it neat.
