Couldn't access again this morning. Looks just like the denial of service attacks I've seen on other websites.
  1.
Got the main page but had to go in three times to get the message board, which are very slowing loading now. I thought it may be due just to the enormous overload on the whole web except I don't have any trouble accessing any of the other sites.
  2.
    very slow switching threads
  3.
I just had my first problem accessing the message boards.....so I took an Excelon patch and stuck it on my laptop...Seems to have improved the memory....

    phranque,

Honestly, your humor makes my day.

I had trouble an hour ago, but no problems now. I promise to look into this. I may have to switch to new software that can handle a bigger capability.

    Shanteuse,

What are "denial of service" attacks?

    joang
  4.
    Denial-of-service attack
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search
"DoS" redirects here. For other uses, see DOS (disambiguation).

DDoS Stacheldraht Attack diagram.A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or persons to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers.

One common method of attack involves saturating the target (victim) machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

Denial-of-service attacks are considered violations of the IAB's Internet Proper Use Policy, and also violate the Acceptable Use Policies of virtually all Internet Service Providers. They also commonly constitute violations of the laws of individual nations.[1]

bluedaze, I don't even know what a router is. Will have to wait for my son, a computer systems engineer. Joan & I both have sons who come to the rescue. He has remote control of my computer, even moves my mouse from NYC. I'll have to wait until he gets back from his business trip.

    Vickie,

How clean will the disk get? I'm always afraid I'll erase important stuff.

    joang
  7.
No, Joan, it shows you a list of what will be cleaned out. They are just excess baggage - not data files. Includes temporary internet files, recycle bin, temporary files, etc. You can check which ones you want to get rid of, or not. All these things just bog down your computer and makes it slower - and most are not needed.
  8.
Every time you delete a program or large data file, it leaves a little blank spot on the disk. The way it was explained to me is that when you defrag your disk, it squeezes the active data together and the blank spots go the front,...thereby creating more usuable space for you to use. It doesn't delete anything. This comes from someone who learned how to cut and paste by remembering "Control C for Cut" and "Control V for VASTE" That was years ago, and I still mentally say "VASTE" every time I do it. Whatever works...is a victory for my feeble mind.
  9.
Joan, all things considered I think I would let Matt do it. I don't have much on mine to worry about but you do. Sounds to me like there might be troll situation here!!!!!! If so it sounds like a International Law situation where someone could get in BIG trouble. Talk to your server.

I just signed back on...after being unable to do so for over 2 hours. This is very strange. I could access the Home Page, but none of the links off of it.

First time ever I was unable to access the site. I restarted my computer thinking that was it, but still couldn't get on.

I couldn't get on an hour ago. Could get to the home page, but not to the discussions. Just tried now again, and I got on okay. Something strange....also got the dreaded message - fatal error - server down.

It is 4:30 PM, and I have had trouble all afternoon. Just got off the phone with my host server again. I am giving the entire problem to Matt, the computer expert. No way am I fooling around with this. Please be patient, and keep trying to get on until I get this fixed.

    Thank you.

I saw on the TV where government sites were accessed by something like the denial of service attack posted above. I have a feeling it attacked other sites too. This is not the only site I have had trouble or slow access. I am sure with how many may be accessing this site at the same time it can overload, but lets hope it is nothing that will be a costly fix.
  13.
Well, I was away all morning and afternoon and when I came back the site is now working wonderfully....everything is loading quickly and I am a happy camper.....
  14.
no problems here any longer .

Hi Joan, for the first time I couldn't get on all day, but seems to be fine now.

I didn't do a thing. Either the host server fixed it after all of my complaining, or it really did have something to do with the Internet yesterday.

All is well. Did Matt find the problem or did it just go away? My hope is that the problem was not a malicious act.

They had more on the news about the internet problem and although it was focused on the government servers was affecting many more. That could have been the problem. They said it was coming from South Korea but felt it was an attack by North Koreans. Who knows!

No problem here. I also read the news about South Korea, but they think it was agents the North Koreans have there. It seems to have affected a lot of sites. Now they are wondering what else the North Koreans can penetrate.

There were many problems with the site and my computer acted ups: wouldn't shut off, etc. etc. Finally got an expert to check it out, and at least part of the problem was my computer itself. There was a faulty ZIP drive (I was trying to access old files), and there was a trickle-down effect. Any way, everything works beautifully now.
