So Saturday was the first pretty day we'd had in what seems like several months. We got all our stuff out on the lawn, as did the neighbors next to us and the ones next to THEM. People stopped at 7:30 or so, before anything was out and priced, and they kept coming until 1 pm!! I'd read to put man-stuff near the sidewalk so men would get distracted. The first men that came along bought two beer-case sized boxes of little glass jars of screws, totally useless as far as I could see, for $2 each! I made about $230 and loaded the remainder either into the car for delivery to the local donation charity or the library; another load of crafts I'd unearthed goes to granddaughter and her mom (we're talking candle making, and a silk screen, and so much else!) And some garbage but not a lot. I really found a lot of stuff I didn't remember having, and am seeing that I really CAN get the house sorta cleaned out!
The good thing was that at the end an auction guy from the neighborhood stopped by and offered me really good prices for some stuff I hadn't gotten around to putting in the sale but that is worth quite a bit! He's coming over tomorrow to get them (we're talking 1904 vases, ugly as sin!) and a painting by a friend of my author, Helga which I have said I'd sell for her (it'll go for her incidentals acc't in the nursing home).
The bad thing was that I was totally completely exhausted, my feet were swollen, and I was supposed to go to a fancy party at the zoo with friends. I went, but I just wilted on a bench until I got some food - and some water - in me. I realized I'd forgotten lunch, and also that I probably had a bit too much sun on the top of my head. For the first time, I am realizing that I am OLD. That I am not going to get younger!! And that probably any improvement on my knee (which IS improved after the synvisc) is going to be temporary. So that if/when we have to place my husband, we will really have to start thinking about clearing out the house even MORE, and selling it, since the stairs are just too exhausting.
Through it all, though, and through yesterday and today as I tried to restore order around the house and start getting ready to abandon ship on Thursday for Maine - my husband was really pretty quiet and sweet and compliant. Amazing!
Problem with those old ugly vases and paintings are they seem to turn out to be worth a lot. Every watch 'Cash in the Attic' , Antique Road Show, etc? Amazes me when someone brings in something they picked up at a yard sale for a buck and find it is worth hundreds or thousands. Unfortunately, we rarely have the time or energy to find out what is valuable.
briegull, it's so good to hear something that went right for someone. It sounds like you really accomplished a lot. I hope today you get to sit with your feet up and relax some. Take care of yourself.
briegull anyone suffering through a garage sale, at our age has to be a little insane. I am a garage sale addict. Love them. On Thur, Fri and Sat. that I am out my car automatically stops at a few. I also love having them. You meet such nice people and as restricted as we are anymore that is a blessing, to say nothing to getting rid of some stuff. But, oh my, the WORK. If I still lived on the main road I would love to have one again but we are off the road and traffic can be a problem.
