What a nightmare I've been having. A week ago, I was out to dinner with my DIL when I got the chills. Well next day, fr's day, went to daughter's. by afternoon I was wiped. Monday , couldn't get up or dressed at all, Tuesday, with the grace of God, I got dressed, packed up and took dear husband in his PJ's and drove the 48 miles home, wouldn't dare tell him how sick I was. Got home and went to bed. Wednesday came, called Son, DIL came took me to the doctor. DH wouldn't let me leave. Screaming that it was all a lie, I wasn't sick and I was doing this so he couldn't drive. Got to dr, 10:45, left 4:00, After having been IV'd with 4 liters saline because I was dehydrated. Actually she had to push me in a wheelchair, I was so weak. Son came that night with dinner for (step-dad) DH and spent time with him while I slept. Thursday passed , continue to upchuck, D.ry..H, and any other way you could lose fluids. Doc wants to see me Friday. Call son, will come and drive us to appt. Husband has fit. screaming, carrying on, don't want him involved, I can run my own life, but you can't drive, you have no license, We'll take a cab. ($40). DS understand, dispite DH yelling at him, and he and DD get together, Daughter comes up the 48 miles and 'surprises' us at the doctor's office having cancelled several business appointments. she takes us him when finished, and gets us packed and back to her home, which is where I am now. she is making me eat ( hadn't eated in days) and she and her DH are attempting to keep him occupied so I can breathe. This is the first I have been strong enough to come here to say hi. So many things going on here. the whole situation has him so confused he can't remember if I'm his mother or his wife, He keeps asking where Chris is, and when I tell him I'm chris he accuses me of lying. It's just been a nightmare, and BTW, we still don't know what has caused this, now I'm on an antibiotic, Potassium, Gatorades to put electrolites back in system, more blood tests due either monday or Tuesday, certain stool samples, visits to the gastro guy, irregular liver enzymes, what else? I got up the morning and he was wide awake so happy to see me feeling so well. I could barely get my body out of bed. Reminds me of Joan's blog, what happened to the guy who cared. My son said, when this is over 'don't you ever get sick again' or we just won't tell him. Has anywone else gone through this , or is it a normal progression, and they always say.

sorry to be so wordy, just needed to vent.

Chris, how awful! being that ill and having DH in your face and the lack of empathy like Sid with joan and lots ofus have been thru this. could it be the swine flu Chris??? thats going around, you just get sick as a dog. maybe the dr will know more after results are in.
stay at your sons house til you are able to be home again. hope you recoup asap! divvi

Oh, Chris, I'm so sorry for your illness and problems with DH's response. I'm not surprised tho -- I was down for several days with respiratory infection -- nothing near as serious as yours -- and DH could not understand why dinner was catch-as-catch-can. Take care of yourself. So glad you have the kids helping -- they sound like jewels. Keep us posted. I've been wondering where you've been as I wanted to "hold hands" with you as we go through this driving stuff together! Drink those fluids...one thing we all learn sooner or later, we must take extra special care of our own health because so much is riding on our shoulders. Positive, healing thoughts coming your way.

O Chris, so glad you came on to let us know what's going on. Sounds very serious, but do hope you are better soon. I am SO glad that you have your dtr & son to help you!! You are blessed, that's for sure!! As for dealing with this in the past, I have never been "that" ill, but anytime I am not feeling well, DH doesn't understand and I just keep trying to "push through" the day. Thankfully, never been too sick to do it. Again, hope you are back to "good" very very soon!! Take care & enjoy the help!! Debbie

chris, what a nightmare. I hope you are now on the mend and so glad you can stay with your son and DIL. I haven't experienced anything like this yet, but I haven't been sick. (knock on wood). Who knows what would happen here if I were. I think if I were really, really hospital sick, he would just go off the deep end, and I don't know what the kids would do about him. I have told them if something happens to me they will have to place him because none of them can spend 24/7 caregiving and keep up with their responsibilities.

I hope you get a diagnosis and not have to go through this again. My daughter is having some liver enzymes issues and her Dr. is sending her to a out of town University Hospital.

Chris so sorry. It is possible that your husband picked up that something bad was going on that he could not understand. Perhaps the break in routine frightened him.
  3.
Bless your heart...someone posted that one of the first things they lose (and continue to lose month after month) is compassion and caring for us! I know for a fact that is my situation. Again, they are like 3-4 year olds, and Mommy is supposed to always be just fine. I believe swine flu is more like the winter-time flu, respiratory distress, sore throat, coughing, fever...and apparently you have a stomach flu, right? I'd be concerned about your liver enzyme levels, - keep an eye on that. Liver problems usually cause vomiting and dehydration.

I'm so glad you have children to help you. This is my greatest fear. I have no one who would come the hundreds of miles they'd have to travel to come here - mostly because none of them believe their Mom would ever be that sick. I've been blessed with good health in the past, and it's come back to haunt me now. 'another story. This is about YOU chris, and I'm watching for future posts that say you're OK. I'm so sorry your husband is acting like a little child. I know how much that hurts.

Oh, Chris, I am so sorry. Do what the doctor says and get better quickly! I know what it feels like when DH doesn't understand that you are sick. Makes things so tough on us. Hurry and get well!

Liver enzyms is one of the ites showing up, also blook in stool, anemia, who knows, and funny, I have been up all night worrying, but you know what, he'll have to be placed if I'm not caring for him, and that's that. Weejun, I'll meet you on the ddriving issue, What really got me, was his insisting I was his mommy and when I said I was chris, he got so angry, saying that "chris' had put me up to something and that's why I was lying. but is was the sweet look in his eyes when I asked, well who am I, and he said Yoo're mommy. They truly do become 3 yr olds.
  5.
Chris, sorry to hear your terrible story....wow, feeling that bad and DH too. I hope you feel totally better soon.

All my husband wanted the last time I was in Emergency (over a year ago) was for both of us to go home. They seriously considered keeping me overnight that time, but actually it was OK for me to go home. The surgeon did not want to do surgery at that point and he was right. The Emergency doc was so upset he made the appointment for me to see my family doctor the next morning himself.

But all my husband wanted was for both of us to go home. He was clueless.

And by the way, one of his very early, pre-EVENT, symptoms was not understanding what was going on when I was so sick I needed to go to the hospital. One of the reasons I'm sure he has Alzheimer's in addition to the cardiovascular dementia is that I know he had some of these really early oddnesses.

Blood in stools is scary, but (sometimes) when one throws up so violently, small blood vessels in the stomach rupture and that could be the reason. It's scary, I'll admit. I've been so sick that I've had dry heaves - with some blood, and that's what I was told....after I was scared to death! You are right, though, if you don't get better soon, he may have to be placed for respite care...which is usually month to month. If he is detached from reality, right now, he probably wouldn't realize where he was...in spite of his verbal outbursts and pleas. So hard on us, though. I know that from personal experience. But, this is all about YOU, my dear. You need mental rest as well as physical rest.

    Chris,

I'm so sorry to hear about this health scare for you. You've been wearing yourself out caring for your husband. Your attitude of - " he'll have to be placed if I'm not caring for him, and that's that." is a good one. You need to get your own health straightened out.

Dear Chris, sure sorry to read about the tough time you had and hope that it will be sorted out and you will be completely better. It sounds like you are getting the best of care, thank goodness. You asked if something like this had happened to any of us. About a year ago, I had a bug bite on my face - I think it was a spider from walking in the woods - and within days, it had ballooned up so that it interfered with my vision, and I felt dazed. I went to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital, and they started an IV antibiotic. I phoned my husband and told him what had happened; he seemed completely uninterested, if anything, ticked off because I wasn't there with him. It's scary to not be well and still be responsible. Yes, you may need to place him soon. Sending you love and best wishes.

Chris...sounds like it WAS serious! So sorry you had to go through all that. You are really fortunate to have children near by. So glad they were there to help. My son got on the first plane out from NY City when I was in the hospital. I felt better immediately. He helped me get up to go to the bathroom while hospitalized, and when home, he handled all my paper work, made dr. appointments, brought me food, etc. I felt blessed, as I'm sure you do too. Good to see you were finally up to posting.

Chris, how are you feeling? Thinking about you a lot and hoping whatever it was has passed. Love from me to you.

Chris I hope you feel better. About 18 months ago I had severe chest pain and shortness of breath. I stood it for about 24 hours and then left work for the chest pain center. The hosp call DH and told him where I was. He was driving then and came to the hosp took one look at me hooked up to all the monitors and said"I am hungry, I am going out to eat" he has never even asked me what the outcome was or how long I was there.

OK, Just wanted to check in. Was at the doc today, either a virus or a bacteria in the colon. I'm taking antibiotic cipro, and more bloods were done today, so I should know tomorrow. all in all, very scary.

Oh, Chris, hang in there. Cipro is what they give you to take if you are traveling and get a diarrhea bug - I gather it works the fastest of any antibiotic.
