in the drizzle, husband very annoyed - I was supposed to follow him carrying the umbrella and leaving the car double-parked as he s-l-o-w-l-y got himself and his walker up to the door. Some sweet person inside came out and took over husband and umbrella while I went to park.
He was actually very good in the waiting room and with the doctor, who wrote a 'prescription' for "lambswool pad or booties for heels, or "foam egg crate for heels." He said the braces work fine but it's hard to get people to wear them. So now I have to find some. Thanks to you guys, I knew what to ask.
So then we get him re-dressed, slowly, and the young nurse/assistant hung around. Out of the blue, he said, "you know, I was hearing today about the people protesting the election in... in... in.". (we supplied "Iran") and he said "Yes. And the police were arresting all the little boys who were running around with their penises hanging out." The nurse had to go into another room to laugh!!!
Did the podiatrist cut his toenails? My husband has yellow curled up toenails and I'm thinking it is time for him to go in regularly to get them cut. We have a first appointment next week.
Since I misjudged the positioning of the toenail clipper and made his toe bleed, we have gone to the Podiatrist for his toenail clippings. Ours has a special room with a licensed pedicure/manicure woman there and she does a great job. I couldn't get my DH to go to a regular manicurist, because he'd think it was too girly girly, even in his mental state. He is great with the Podiatrist's girl. ...so, it works for ME!
Fortunately, I have always been John's personsal 'manicurist'. During his professional life, he always liked to have neat, clean hands and nails....I always gave him the full treatment, fingernails, toenails, foot buffing. Did you know that they even make a nail care line for men??? Forget what its' called, but the polish has a whitening agent in it and it doesn't dry really shiny. Just strengthens the nails. Lately, he's a little 'antsy' about all my messing about with his feet, especially pushing back cuticles, but its better than the nursing home did......NOTHING.
He'd been watching NBC all morning, or MSNBC. I have no idea what he heard. THis morning I mentioned something silly the cats had been doing last night (we have evening training, where they learn tricks for treats) and after his shower he told me that his "roommate" had been doing something with the cats. In his eyes, the person he was then talking to was not the same person who'd gotten him up and helped him into the shower. This is not uncommon.
I have to call around this morning; I located some things on the internet - "bunny boots" which aren't the military kind, and various other things, but the doctor said to look at them before I buy so at this point I'm going to try local surgical supply stores. I did find a good supply store: wisdomking.com which has various different kinds. MOst run under $50.
Took hb to podiatrist this a.m. because he'd been complaining about a bunion on the outside of his right foot; and, in fact, had cut a slit and/or hole out of two pairs of shoes. (The last one (Merrell's) he said he didn't know how the cut got there. HA HA. We do, don't we? He'd told me he was going to do it, and I told him no because they were too expensive to cut up. When I told him I knew he'd done it because he told me was going to, he said, "No, I didn't; they're too expensive.)
This is the FYI part, some I've read on this site earlier:
Doctor trimmed his toenails and "skimmed" callouses. Said if one is on Medicare, one can have such treatment every 2 months--no need to pay for a pedicure or farrier to trim. He said often people w/dementias pick, poke, slice at feet and cause sores. He recommended ASICS shoes. Suggested we look on line to see what's available and locate a store. I've done that. Also found a site that's having a sale and shipping is free. So AFTER, hb has tried some on in a town 45' south, I can order on-line if it's less expensive.
