I thought it might be fun to find out what celebs people have met. I'll start: Amy Grant, when she toured Word, Inc. offices and came thru the accounting dept.; Jerry VanDyke (Dick's brother) at a restaurant in Dallas; Tommy Smothers, when he rushed my fraternity; and Fred Soeje (sp?), owner of Micky Finn's in San Diego (fraternity brothers at San Jose State).
Ruth Williamson, of Nip/Tuck fame (she's been a guest star on a zillion TV shows, including ER and Law and Order). Here she is is singing -- you'll probably recognize her. (starts in operating room briefly, HOWEVER please do not watch after she starts singing because it's gross -- operating room scenes, ecch)
Let's see.....Susan Saradon (who said that my son was the most beautiful baby she had ever seen), Chris Botti (trumpet), the guy who played "Tonio" on "As The World Turns", Bobby Orr (I thought for sure he'd marry me!).....Do band members count? I've met several of Josh Groban's band and Barry Manilow's band (no, I'm not a roadie). Gosh, I thought I'd met more, but this gives me something to think about!
I meat Bill Clinton when he was govenor of Arkansas. He came to a parade in our home town and walked down the sidewalks shaking hands and talking to people.
Years ago I worked in a couple of restaurant/clubs in Fort Lauderdale and met some celebs: Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Charlie Pride, Dick Houser, Jim Ed Brown, Lonnie Shore, Barbara Mandrell and her sisters.
Not much into celebrities...I remember Paul Newman coming to my house in the mid 60's and he sat on my mom's tv set when he was speeking. My mom told him that she did not care if he was famous, but he should mind his manners and sit on the chair, not on the tv....I was mortified...also met Dudley Moore at Tampa airport...he was so drunk that he looked like he fell out of the gutter.....
I met Julia Louise Dreyfus in the grocery store in Jackson Hole, she asked me if I knew where the coffee was. DUH, of course I know where the coffee is.
Forgot about the politicos. Norm Coleman and Al Franken, currently embroiled in the battle over a Senate seat, and Walter, Joan, and Ted Mondale, and Hubert Humphrey's son Skip.
I met Christina Applegate when she was a child actress on that cop show with Danny Desidiero(sp). They were filming at the beach park near Santa Monica pier. She wanted to slip away from it all (I guess). The carousel was closed but she was hanging out there. I came upon her as my cousin and I were looking for bathrooms (LOL) She asked me for the time and was sighing that she didn't want to go back to work yet. Told me she was tired and just wanted to go home. On my way back down the pier I met her Mom, asking me if I've seen a young girl wearing a pink mini skirt. I was tempted to say no, but since she was a kid I told her where I'd last seen her.
I met several other celebs working as a nurse at hospitals in Santa Barbara, CA, and doing private duty in Montecito. So can't probably should tell who I met in that capacity.
Spent an evening in a motel room with Paul Newman. I forgot where we were, maybe Riverside CA, some track or other. Of course, there were dozens of other people there as well, including DH before AD. He was auto racing when we were and the room was being used to register drivers, etc. Another time exchanged 'hi' w/him when he came over to look at a car we were crewing for in Atlanta.
Johnny Carson (he was a small, slight man) in my doctor's office and Jay Leno (he's hugh) in a book store. Robt Redford in Westport CT, Jamie Lee Curtis in the sports store, 'Colombo' in the hardware store, the Adams Family father in a restaurant, I'm forgetting their names, can't remember others right now. I do have the advantage of living all my life in Los Angeles/H'wood--and Deanna Durbin for those of you who are as ancient as I am.
Met several national politicians and actors while working. Most memorable...have a great picture with Mohammed Ali, also cared for crime boss of New England Mafia and since our hospital was the trauma center for the Clintons while they summered on the Vineyard, was sure that we were going to have Bill as a patient the summer of the Monica thing. Did you see how Hillary glared at him!!!! It was fun meeting White House medical detail and getting the scoop.
No, doneit, you have to have either shaken their hand and/or spoken with them to qualify. Sorry, OJ doesn't count. Who is Bobby Orr, tennis player? Name is sort of familiar, but I don't recall who he is. Oh....race driver?
Sat on Sky King's lap when he visited a nearby town. Have a broken drum stick I got at a Paul Revere and the Raiders concert before they became famous. Met the Katina Brothers (now called Katinas) when they would perform at our church before they became famous in the Christian Music world. My husband was head usher so we helped with set up and making sure they had what they needed. Other than that, live in a no celeb world.
Doneit....Bobby Orr, Hockey player? My mom was Anne Bancroft's personal assistant for over 30 years, so I've met tons of celebs. They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like us, and most of them are great, some of them aren't worth the time of day. When I was a funeral director, I met quite a few celebs as well. I directed Harry Nilsson's funeral in 1994, and the guest list was a who's who of rock and roll. Ringo Starr. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Don Henley, Mickey Dolenz, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, it was a trip! They were all so gracious. And speaking of OJ Simpson, I was in charge of Ron Goldman's funeral. (Westlake Village, CA)
Met Charles McArthur in a restaurant in Louisville, Ky, Barbara McNair in another nightclub in Kentucky, Sam Wiech in Tampa and had lunch at the WV Governor's Mansion with Jay Rockefeller and wife. I went to high school with Steve Cohen (the husband of Katrina Van der Hooven) and knew him when he worked in his father's jewelry store and Carolyn Bond (former first lady of Missouri). I have met the Chiefs of Clan Kennedy and Clan McGregor.
My claim to fame is that I also went to high school with Johnny Depp's father and Merle Travis's daughter. (Merle Travis wrote 16 Tons and many other C&W songs back in the 50's), she was my partner in art class.
Bettyhere, will you introduce me to Jamie Lee Curtis?
Worked for Rocky Marciano; went to school with Roberta Sherwood's son and met her; went to school with Johnny Holliday, had dinner with Johnny Carson; did some work with Johnny Weismueller - more but I can't think.
My DH spent an evening with Tom Cruise and Mimi Rodgers (Tom's then-girlfriend) in the 1980's when he ran a Black Tie event, the premiere of the movie Top Gun. It was done in an airplane hangar in the D. C. area--I think it was at a military base (?). I didn't go--Steve had to work all evening and I would have been on my own. Have a great picture of both of them in their tuxedos. My hubby looked as handsome as Tom!
my second husband, was godfather to a very famous nightclubs owner in the 80's. we were quite the hobnobbers and jettsetters back then. my weekends were spent in clubs being 'seen' -among my hobbnobbing list, tom jones (sang a song at my table..swoon~~~:) george hamilton, tall/dark/very handsome! his eyes were lined like from the love at first bite, movie? flirting while dancing-his date was liz taylor that nite, and i followed her into the bathroom with my friend. she was stunning. never saw a face/eyes like that ever! and she was into her 60s..fabulous! had my pic in papers many times:) and my fav was a pic of rod stewart , as my hairdo and his were 'twins'. at the time..haha. he actually told me 'i love your hair!"..i said mutual:) -met evil kneival early in his fame. hard to believe how things have changed over the yrs! hahah. divvi ps Vickie, i went to johnny weismullers house! haha.
Am allowed to be part of this elite group? The closest I came to anyone famous was when I visited my niece in Scotland and we went to the Edinburgh Castle. Anthony Armstrong Jones walked by us and nodded and said "Goodmorning". So that's my claim to fame!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robert Gordon "Bobby" Orr, OC (born March 20, 1948) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player. A defenceman, he is considered to be one of the greatest hockey players of all time.[1][2] He played his National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Boston Bruins, with the exception of two brief seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks.
Orr won two Stanley Cup championships with the Bruins in 1970 and 1972 and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP both years. Winning a record eight Norris Trophies as the league's best defenceman, Orr is often credited for revolutionizing his position.[3] He remains the only defenceman to have won the league scoring title with two Art Ross Trophies and holds the record for most points and assists in a single season by a defenceman.
I went to school with Jerry Jones from the third grade through college. For our high school reunion about four years ago, he invited the senior class to Dallas, had us all to the Cowboys' club for dinner and party; gave us a tour of Cowboy stadium, introduced us to the team; and treated us to the game in the special section where we were treated to lunch before the game! It was a very special highlight for most of us! <grin>
As to celebrities - mine are politicians and authors (being a big reader) - Ronald Reagan and Nancy; Poppa George and Barbara Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Lady Bird Johnson, and authors Julie Garwood, Sandra Brown, Judith McNaught, Jude Devereau, Dom Deluise (cookbook), Nora Roberts, and many others. I've gone to Book and Author conventions and met so many that I can't mention them (or remember a lot of them!). I've met Debbie Reynolds, Pete Fountain, and The Four Freshman (1962).
My, just thinking of these events has triggered a lot of memories!
Divvi and Diane, I'd love to hear some of your tales!!!!
Doneit - I would have bet my last nickel that I was the only hockey fan on the boards. Watched the Stanley Cup Championship game 2 w/my youngest son and his family last night. Go Red Wings!! :)
NATALIE WOODS--- I actually had a date with her but her chaperones cacncelled her going to the function we had agreed to go to. I used to be a professional water skier, Tommy Bartlett Water Ski and Jumping boat Thrill Show. We were performing in Minneapolis/St pPaul on the Miss. river. She had come out to our show for some publicity shots of her skiing behind one of our boats. I was the boat driver. We were going to a party sponsered by the local Ski Club. But her manager(s) decided she should not go for some reason.
At least I met her and did ask her for a date, which she did accept. I thought we had that spark!!! Oh Well!!!!! It might have changed my entire life.
Richard Simmons is one of my collectors. Met him several times. Used to live in the same neighborhood as Shaquel (sp?) O'Niel and Tammy Baker and her kids hung out with ours at times. My evil step-daughter is actress Joanna Canton....no particular great "fame", but she's been in lots of movies and on the series "That 70's Show" for a while. Oh, and some old burger king commercials. Don't know what she's doing now....dont care.
Jimmy: I left Jamie Lee & her adopted daughter in the Sports Chalet in the Marina shopping center. For all I know, she's still there. Oh, wait, I think she's doing yogurt commercials now.
As for MacArthur: During the Korean War (the forgotten one) DH was drafted & he was sent to Ft. Belvoir VA where I joined him. Pres. Truman had called MacArthur home. Important history lesson, who was to be in charge? The Pres or the General? There was a big military parade in DC, Truman, MacA, etc were on a raised platform to review the troops, I stood on the sidewalk across Pennsylvania Ave trying to see DH march by--thousands of GI's all dressed alike. I never saw him but afterwards I asked him if he saw me. No, he said, but I never missed a pair of pretty legs the whole way.
Let's see, Bobby Orr taught my oldest son how to cross his feet while skating, very patient and kind, my son is mentally challenged and Bobby Orr was wonderful. Back when Tony Orlando & Dawn were the big thing he kissed my right cheek (face, lol), my niece is Kaity Clark. She and her boyfriend Caley are both on the tv show Bones, currently just extras in the background during lab scenes. Exciting!
When I was a kid my godmother arranged visits by celebrities of the day to visit the VA and give shows or visit with the patients. We had a new car (a Packard!) so we got to drive them; I skipped school to go along. Met and visited with and got autographs from Sinatra, Dinah Shore, Tony Martin, Harpo and Chico Marx, Jack Benny. Later, my boys were extras in movies, and we met Johnnie Winters, Eddie Albert and ZhaZha Gabor, and various others. I was an extra in The Great Gatsby and my partner and I were paired with Sam Waterston. Met, but didn't talk to, Mia, Bruce Dern, etc. Stage managed a play directed by Kate Burton at Brown, and also one starring Meredith Viera when she was a local anchor, so I knew them. On Monhegan I've dried dishes with Tammy Grimes, hiked with various Broadway actors, and worked with Toms-of-Maine Chappell who is one of my heros. Everyone there knows Jamie Wyeth to one degree or another.
At Brown of course there were many celebrity kids. One boy asked to see the Provost, I forget why. Secretary asked his name and he said "Alexander." Last name? Of Greece. Another time a secretary practically fainted when Jackie Kennedy came in to visit with her friend Harriet Sheridan and talk about her son John. Actually he was very sweet to all the secretaries, etc. Didn't want to be a pol, wanted to be an actor. Was in a play in which he had to urinate onstage (back to audience). His greatest fan among the secretaries was a little old lady, proudly a virgin. Determined to go to that play, and raved about it afterwards!!
Am hockey fan. I married a man from Wilmington, MA. Never heard of hockey until I met him. I learned hockey watching Boston on a 9" BW TV in 1971-72. Then we moved to Seattle and became season ticket holders for the WHL Seattle Breakers (later changed to Thunderbirds). We were so disappointed that Boston was knocked out. Don't know who I am rooting for now.
Speaking of Jamie Lee, I forgot--50 some years ago they were shooting a movie at the old LAX, I think it was called 'Boing, Boing,' starring Tony Curtis. I was stopped at a signal when I had the sense that someone was looking at me--I turned to the car next to me & the driver was Tony Curtis. We sat & flirted with each other until horns started blowing and then drove off. He couldn't see that I was pregnant with my son, otherwise, who knows! Nonetheless, he was the most gorgeous man I'd ever seen. I guess he's gotten old by now.
Tony Curtis was gorgeous in his younger days. Ten yrs ago I worked with a woman about 20 yrs younger than me--I told her to get the old movie Spartacus to see how he looked in his prime.
John Edwards when he was campaigning for president in 2004. Barack Obama right after he was elected to the senate and was doing a listening tour around the state (I live in Illinois). Robert Hanssen, the FBI spy who was the topic of the movie "Breech" was in my college class. I knew him fairly well. When we had our last class reunion I learned that very few people remembered him. I guess he was practicing to be a spy even then!
