I'm new to this mac stuff and I was moving my fingers around on the touchpad when suddenly the lettering
got bigger and much easier to read. I like it and want to know how I did it. Anyone?

You can hit the button with the apple sign (it also has the squiggly slanted four-corners sign) and the plus or minus sign, and it will increase or decrease the size of the font. (you may have to highlight part of the words, and it will increase the font size for the whole page)

You are going to LOVE your mac. SO much easier to use than the PC. When you add devices like a router or printer, the mac installation is easy -- the mac will connect itself to a website and get everything all installed, with very little help needed from you.... :-)

    Thanks Chanteuse!
I already love it, I think you are right. It's going to be much easier for me than the pc. Ahh that works good,
great big letters for eyes going bad.
Thanks again, have a great sunday.

Yes, I've had a mac for over a year now (used to have them in the past but not in recent years) and I love it. - you've got a touch pad, so it must be the macbook. I have this and since I had a flat-screen display for my PC earlier, I hooked it up to the mac and got wireless mouse and keypad, tucked the mac under the screen, and use it as a big machine.

If you use the mousepad, and were used to having a PC, know that hitting the mousepad with two fingers simultaneously will give you what the right click did with the PC mouse, or what you can also do with the apple-click on things. Try it and you'll see what I mean.

OMG, that's great, I was missing the right click. I also got a mouse as I am so used to one, but no keyboard. My kids have been
after me for a long time to make this leap and I'm so glad I have finally crossed over.

What does Mac actually stand for and why are they so expensive?

Mac is short for Macintosh -- they are the Apple computers that you see advertised. They are not expensive, if you compare the Mac to a PC that has the same features. Some PCs are cheap because they aren't as fast, don't have as much storage capacity, etc. And the Mac is really much easier to use, and they break down much less frequently. When you look at a PC that can do the same things a Mac can do, the Mac is actually cheaper, according to several articles I've read where they researched this.

I'm also a Mac person. Just upgraded from an iBook to new MacBook. I initially went to a Mac for the OS-X operating system based on Unix which I used in college 35 years ago. I now teach Intro to Unix for local community college. There are some things I prefer, though, about the windows desktop. I can't get used to a touchpad, maybe my fingers are too big or too old or something. I much prefer a real mouse but don't like the mouse that comes with the Mac. I like one with a real right-click button, scroll wheel, etc. I use the Logitech usb mouse for laptops with my MacBook. A wireless Microsoft mouse will also work with the Mac and I understand MS now has a bluetooth version that I might try, to free up one of my usb ports.

Macs are also relatively immune to the viruses that plague PCs. You're right, jules, Macs just plain work!

Thanks, Shanteuse. Is that wireless? The price is right, I paid around $70 for my Logitech.

The one I use is not wireless but I am pretty sure they make a wireless version. Also I noticed today on Yugster.com that they are selling a Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse that is Mac compatible. Yugster deals are for one day only so if you want one you'll have to move fast. This is a good price.

Hmm, I just double-checked that and even though they say it is Mac compatible, it says on the right side of the page that it needs Windows Vista (bleah). So I think you'd need to double-check that on the Microsoft website to be sure it would work.

I use a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard, and they're fine with the mac. My only gripe with the macbook pro that I have is that it doesn't have enough usb ports, so I have usb hubs sticking out from both sides. Another thing that I really like is being able to back up with Time Machine and an external hard disk. They're very cheap these days. To make it work, you plug it in and turn it on. PERIOD!! I now am not doing a lot of work stored on the computer, so I just turn it on when I get a prompt, about every 10 days, and leave it on for a day to do its backup. And of course, no battling viruses and so on. I also love the spotlight feature which allows you to find anything anywhere, within documents. MUCH better than the search in Windows.

I thought I'd see, a year ago, if I could live without buying anything microsoft. So I downloaded Open Office, which is free, and does everything I need as far as word processing, spreadsheet, powerpoint.. I also have Graphic Converter for a graphics editor. The mac comes with iphoto, which is the equivalent of Photoshop Elements. However, when I got my mac it came with Fusion, so I have Windows XP installed and my old copies of Photoshop 7 and Pagemaker in it. (and Spider, I confess!) I have had NO problem running PC programs in that Windows emulation.

And I bought myself a toy the other day - I'd gotten a commission I wasn't expecting to pay for it. I got an ipod Touch, which is the iPhone without the phone. I am enjoying it very much. I showed my husband the Nora/piano playing cat video on youtube this aft, and he was just delighted with it!! I also got a great bird-identifying program for $2.99.. etc.
