starting a new tally. the old thread never really had a thread to add to if you find your spouse has the 'red blotch' on the back of their head. if your spouse does, and if you know of any other AD person who does, please add it. along with orig diagnosis. it may be helpful in the long run to have it all in one place! i'll start-
Divvi's spouse has redblotch -started low nape and over the yrs has spread up the back of head. did not have prior to AD. AD/vascular AD combo
doneit, i think sunshyne explained it away with her post on AZ site with the birthmarks theories-. scientific minds like the drs will have a rational input for it. ISNT it scary that so many here in our small group are seeing it? and briegull didnt have it as well as others and NOW does. i think as others add to this post we are going to get a shock how rampant it is. i do hope some who visit AD NH can give us input. nikki be sure to add the 2 patients at lynns nh when you post! joan i dont remember if sid had it all along as you had your friend check into it and her opinion is stork bite birthmark. is it new for sid as well? all i know is my DH has grown alot since we started this topic a while back. there were also many more who posted here an are now gone but said their spouse had it as well. if they are still around it would be nice they would offer it again on this thread. i have a sixth sense about this its more to do than just blotch. ps my ancestors were ALL gypsies from moravia in europe who traveled in caravans and told fortunes for livings=just like the movies!..hahah.. i have it in the blood-. divvi
Divvi, Another thing we have in common besides being Sagittarius. Both my Maternal Grandmother & Mother could read fortune's by using a deck of cards. People paid my Grandmother 25 cents to have their fortune told. I wish I had paid more attention. Lots of things they told people came true. I tell my grandaughters that they were witches. lol
If it is caused by small blood vessels breaking, maybe the determining factor is how the dementia is affecting the integrity of the vessel walls. If it is somehow weakening them, that would explain. And it could be the vessels in that spot of the neck are the most vulnerable.
no red blotches last week , saw dh today sure enough there it was red blotches going into the hair line red further up the back of the head, why i never noticed last week maybe didn`t get a good look, late stage 6 early 7 AD
Bringing this topic up again. I recently had my husband's nice wavy hair buzzed off...he rubs his head constantly, so it always looked greasy. Anyway, I noticed the red blotches are much further up the back of his head, close to the crown now. Anyone else noticed the red blotches progressing?
kadee i've said it many times my DH has them growing up his head. his hair is silver and they are very noticeable and even the girl who cuts his hair mentioned it last time. shes been cutting his hair 15yrs and knows they werent there before. started out small spot on nape of neck and moved upwards over now the main part of back of head.wierd. maybe some newer members can check the backs of spouses head for RED blotches and report back. divvi
WOW did this thread ever catch my eye! My DH has these spots on his neck and into his hair. We see his dermotologist frequently for psoriosis and skin cancers (melanoma and "squimies" (sp). The Dr. said the rash on his neck was stork bite. DH has had this as long as I have known him so just didn't think anything about it. I have noticed the Dr. looks at the rash each time we visit, but does not comment on it. I will have to take a closer look to see if it has spread. He is in bed at this time so am anxious to take a look tomorrow.
My husband doesn't have the red blotch, but has a pea-sized bump just below the hairline on the back of his head. Several doctors have said it's nothing. He had a similar growth removed from the bridge of his nose right before dx; two labs analyzed it and said it was something unusual--they couldn't identify what it was. I have always wondered if they are related to the amyloid plaque buildup in his brain.
My Dh's red splotch seems to have grown, and now he has some smaller ones that weren't there before further up on the back of his head. I'm keeping an eye on them.
My hb has had a red blotch for a long time on his neck behind ear. Had a biopsy and is scheduled to have skin cancer removed next week. This a.m. when I was putting his Exelon patch on, I noticed several red blotches about the size of a dime across his neck at the hairline; they weren't there before. Will have dr look at those next week.
Sorry, I have to put my two cents in! We see this very frequently in newborns and call it a "stork bite." It is not considered to be abnormal, just an area with dilated blood vessels. Babies often have them around their nose, forehead and eyelids as well and these tend to fade. For many people the "stork bite" never goes away, just hides under the hair. Both of our daughters (in their 20's) and my husband have it. I don't know if I have it - can't see the back of my head!!
Dr newport, we have been over this alot with this opinion that these red marks are what you say-'stork bites' . but those of us who know that our spouses did not have them prior to AD are in disagreement with this opinion. AND they are growing up the head, not just a small blotch but my DH head is almost full in the mid section when it started out as a small blotch at the nape of the neck-. our hairstylist has been doing his hair for 15yrs and says the same thing, wasnt there. others verify the same on thier spouses here-. i dont think stork bites occur this late in life. of course i respect your opinion and others but i totally disagree about this being 'stork bite' . i researched the SB subject when it first came and still was not convinced. i will always think its got something to do with the AD and vasoconstrictions of sorts. at least thats my uneducated guess. its quite strange anyway you look at it! divvi
I checked my husband's head for the red patch in August when this thread was active -- there was none. Now, it has appeared. I thought I spotted it a couple weeks ago and last night in the bathtub after a fresh haircut I had a good chance to check it out. It is a couple inches in diameter and is just above the hair line. Is anybody counting?
I know for a fact Lynn did not have the red blotch when these posts were first being made. I will admit I was more than skeptic. But, low and behold, now he does have it! I don't know what causes this, but he did NOT have it even last year. It is very prominant now.
well we keep insisting (at least me) that it is not stork bite as sooo many in the field of medicine are trying to lead us. and those like you jeanette and nikki are proof in the pudding! my DH has half his back head covered in blochey red. and his started out with what was a small pink spot at the nape of the neck. and he has been off all AD meds and any mindaltering drugs for over 2yrs so i cant say its the meds producing it. it is quite mindboggling - divvi
Maybe somehow the disease is causing little capillaries on the scalp to break or show up more - sort of like varicose veins on the scalp. Something like that is about the only explanation I can think of.
My two cents worth...Foster developed a red spot in the last six months of his life..from the back center hairline up into his head. It started about the size of the tip of my little finger, and grew to the size of a quarter. Say what you will, I will always believe it was related to Alzheimer's Disease.
My dh has a red spot about the size of a pencil eraser just above the hairline on the back of his head. Still waiting for our call back appt. and diagnosis. We will be away for a few weeks...I will check in when we return. Thanks again to all of you.
Wonder it the blotch could be a side effect of meds? I have not noticed any red blotches but DH has a spot on his back that itches..it is flat..not sure what it is..maybe a mole and if so it has to be looked at but it had some reddish in it..and it itches..or did the other day but he has not complained since then tho.
time to bring this up again! if you can check your spouses head about the blotch! its quite an interesting phenomena. post if you find it! and since starting this thread years ago my DH is in late end stage 7 and its spread almost the right quadrant of his low to mid head. definitely got bigger with time. hes hasn't been on AD meds for years!
