Here comes a newbie I am just sick about missing this HBO special. I don't think they advertised it enough. I only saw it flash two times and missed the date of the airing. I hope I will be able to get a DVD, or maybe they will replay it?
My husband, age 57, has had EOAD diagnosis for three years now. I am so glad HBO decided to do this project. I have found even the general medical community is very lacking in awareness (my husband was misdiagnosed twice), and the way AD is portrayed in advertising leaves a lot to be desired. This is not an old person's disease any more, and in our case, we have still have children in the home. Most people are aware that the AD person has trouble "remembering" things, but I find the day-to-day behaviors the hardest thing to deal with as a caregiver, the drop-what-you're-doing-and-help-me-now part, and it's hard for family members who aren't in the home to understand how tough it is.
Anyway, enough spouting for the first time in. Birdie
I am seeing it on the Menu Screen quite frequently. Sunday, I know for sure they repeated all three programs, one after the other.. Yes, you can buy it on line. I believe Joan has a link to seeing it on line and also ordering the DVD. It's an excellent look into the world of AD... and is not as explicit as many feared it would be.
Welcome to my website. Please log onto the home page - www.thealzheimerspouse.com, and look at the resources on the left side. There is a link to the HBO special - all four segments. Just click and watch. If you want to order the DVD, there is an Amazon link to it on the right side of the website.
You have come to a place of comfort for spouses who are trying to cope with the Alzheimer's/dementia of their husband/wife. The issues we face in dealing with a spouse with this disease are so different from the issues faced by children and grandchildren caregivers. We discuss all of those issues here - loss of intimacy; social contact; conversation; anger; resentment; stress; and pain of living with the stranger that Alzheimer's Disease has put in place of our beloved spouse.
The message boards are only part of this website. Please be sure to log onto the home page - www.thealzheimerspouse.com - and read all of the resources on the left side. I recommend starting with "Newly Diagnosed/New Member" and "Understanding the Dementia Experience". There are 3 sections for EOAD members - two of which focus on the young teens whose parents have EOAD (early onset AD). Do not miss the "previous blog" section. It is there you will find a huge array of topics with which you can relate. Log onto the home page daily for new blogs; news updates; important information.
I hope you will visit often and get the support and information you are looking for.
Currently, the message boards and all of the resources can be accessed for free, but due to the high cost of maintaining the website, anyone who is able to make a payment in any amount to help defray the costs may do so by clicking on the"sticky topic" - Payments to this website. Any purchases made through the Amazon links and Zazzle Marketplace also help keep this site up and running. Thank you.
Birdie, my DH is also 57 and was diagnosed around 3 years ago. I agree with you. It's not as much the forgetting things but not being able to do anything for himself. Of course, that is a form of forgetting. I watched the HBO special online.
Birdie, welcome! Watch out for all the cat lovers here! <grin> HBO is running the 5 - hour long project sections and if you don't want to watch it online, you can check your schedule for it and tape it and watch it whenever you wish.
We are sorry for the reason you have to be here, but will be here for you when you need us! Our leaky boat has its holes plugged, doneit! <grin>
Welcome Birdie! Sorry you have to be here, but I'm glad you are! I think the leaky boat analogy is right on point, doneit! We'll just keep bailing the water because that's what we do! Again, welcome!! ~Di
