Her Mom has AD. Her Mom was checked out of a facility by a photographer and journalist from the Enquirer Mag. Brooke is livid and looking to bring charges against the two, AND possibly the ALF for allowing it. The two claimed to be "friends" who just wanted to take her out for a cheeseburger. It's on the AOL home page (Popeater) yesterday and again today.

Are you serious? They could have kidnapped Brooke's mother and because Brooke is a celebrity, held her for a ransom. If the Inquirer publishes one word or one snapshot of Brooke's mother, they need to be sued for all they are worth,... (and divide the proceeds from the suit between Joan and the Alzheimer's Association)

    This is outragious.

here's the link to the story. Go half way down page, and in left margin the first small box is Brooke and her Mom. Says the police got Brooke and alerted her that her Mom was at a restaurant with these people. It is dumbfounding.

I saw this last night & thought they didn't know what they were doing because as we lament daily--no one really knows or understands. So maybe some good will come of it & others will understand a bit more. Otherwise, I hope she sues them to h.ll and they rot there forever. God, if anyone had taken my DH, they'd be six feet under concrete after I'd put them thru a meatgrinder! She has got to be beyond the bounds of furious.

The National Inquirer is a nasty, innuendo, lie filled piece of trash that should be banned. Our Constitution allows for free press, but this is hurtful. People read a headline in the check out line and repeat it as gospel to the next person they see. I don't know why people buy this trash, - ....but they do...and that's why they are able to stay in business...

I have a diffent take on the issue. There has been no lost love between Brook and her mother. Lunch was right next door to the mom's ALF. Permission was granted for the outing. Reporter and mom already knew each other. Lots of publicity for Brook.

There was a story in the Seattle papers a few months ago about a woman who took a man with dementia that she was caring for to the court house and got married to him. The poor guy had no clue as to what was going on. Then this woman took him to the bank and started withdrawing funds.

If I remember correctlyk, the banker called a family member (son/daughter). The last report was that she was arrested but these things can and do happen.

If there is someone out there from the Puget Sound area that read this, how far off am I? Perhaps you know more about this than I do.

I can't imagine anyone other than a celebrity watcher or step-kids who would remove someone from an NH for dubious purposes. I would
think a celebrity like Brooks Shield would have had things in place about that situation. I bet she does now. We have heard all sorts of
stories on this site about step-kids and the lengths they will go to when it comes to step-parents. Things should be written in records of
certain named individuals who can remove them from the NH for an outing or whatever. Then, there is the wedding business Mawzy
mentioned. There all kinds of weird people in this world. If I were to put dh in an nh I would only put immediate family members names down
with permission to check-out. I can't think of a single other person who would legitamently want to do so.

I am with Doneit, it was my understanding that the lunch was a pre arranged outing that had been approved as the friend was already a know family friend who just happened to be a reporter. It was my understanding that the lunch was not an interview type thing, but Brooke has turned it into a media circus.

I saw Brooke sheilds on the view the other day. Funny, she just said that thier relationship had changed and that she now took care of her mother. I wonder why she wouldn't have said more, but people think Ad is something shameful.

when i heard about it i was thinking i cant believe a NH would open itself to such liability for lawsuit as to allow someone out without consent. even daycares you have to show proper ID and be on the 'list' or its a no-go- i agree with doneit, publicity has to be a big part or you'd just keep quiet about it and find out from authorities at NH how it happened. and someone authorized it-divvi

Chris--I saw her discuss her Mom on The View as well. She didn't mention the dx, but now that's it's public record, the Alz Assn should certainly recruit her as a spokesperson. Maybe she would testify to Congress next year, like Maria Shriver did at the Public Policy Forum this past March. The celebrities are what catch the public's attention, i.e., Maria, Sandra Day O'Connor, etc.

My understanding about Brooke Shields (and I'm not sure I'm right) is that she took control over her own life once she was 18 (went to college, etc.), and there was some problems with her mother over some of the career decisions her mother had made when she was a child. But most of those problems were put aside well over a decade ago.

Also, as far as I know this was not one of those situations where the child made huge amounts of money none of which was still in existence once the child became an adult. Her mother did follow the laws that were in place in New York State and California to conserve the child's money outside of reasonable living expenses. I am not aware of any fights over money, and that would have been the killer if it had happened because Brooke Shields was working before she was a year old.

I would think that if a Mother of a beautiful child was officially her Manager as well, it would affect the overall relationship between the two. That said, the Manager's "job" as it were, would be to keep the business going and maintain profitability. When your company product just happens to be your DAUGHTER, it becomes complicated. I believe I heard she met the entry qualifications to be accepted at Princeton and graduated cum laude. During these years, she was a college student. Imagine the impact that had on her mother's life. This was decades ago, but the press has a tendancy to cling to anything that's juicy news.

I still worry about anyone taking a LO out of a nursing home if they are not on a list of allowable people. The "old friend" should have had someone in the family add his name to the list before they made plans. If her mother has dementia, she shouldn't be able to give her own self permission to leave with just anyone.

I don't think I heard: Does Brooke have guardianship or converatorship for her Mother? If not, I think she could leave the facility on her own without permission????
  9.
That's a good question, Vickie. Because it is a Dementia center, can a resident leave anytime at will? Usually Dementia facilities have different rules than Assisted Living Facilities. If they don't, - it's good to know. This brings us back to the older discussion re: whether we needed anything more than a Power of Attorney for our loved ones - especially when they live in NHs.

Forewarned is forearmed...and we should heed these events as reasons to check further ..or as another Thread asked, "What to ask Nursing Homes"... I'm putting this question on the list, when and if it becomes necesary to ask.
