Is there and allergy medicine safe for an Alzheimers patient to take? My DH is forever blowing his nose, clearing his throat and coughing and it is driving me crazy. I was going to give him Benadryl but found out it isn't good for those with AZ. I have googled Claritin but couldn't find anything for or against.
Second question. Why would someone with AZ who has problems with memory expect a relative with AZ to remember things? DH thinks his sister should remember all sorts of things and we keep going over the same ground. His excuse is his sister has never had a good memory and that she should remember this or that!!!! She is further along than DH but he just doesn't get it.
I don't know the answer to the first question, but the answer to your second question is exactly what you said - "he doesn't get it." When they have AD, they just don't get it.
jean, our dr had DH on zyrtec but it made him loopy while he was still on namenda and razadyne. so i didn tgive it unless he was needy.now that dh is off the ad meds i use benedryl if hes really stopped up and dr said its ok i give the childrens dose and he seems to be ok with it but like i say he doesnt take the AD meds anymore so he tolerates it better. divvi
I give rynatan or generic for zertex and he seems to be ok with it and he is on Aricept and Namenda. I haven't been giving him much this spring because he doesn't sneeze at all and the only symptoms he has is clear drainage from his nose. I don't know if that is allergy or the AD. He has always had allergies and taken allergy meds for years. Seems the medication does nothing for his runny nose.
Years ago DW was on Zyrtec. She was really zonked out. One day, as she was reading an ad for Zyrtec she noticed the part about "drowziness" so stopped it. Her lethargy ended almost immediately. Recently she was put on Claritin-D for an allergic cough. It helped the cough, and didn't seem to have any effect on the AD.
Thanks everyone for your input. I was going to the store today and planned on checking at the pharmacy for an allergy med. It is cold, rainy and windy here in SC and the heat index for the day is 62 so I think I will wait until tomorrow:-)
Joan, DH is so high functional that I find it hard to believe he doesn't understand about his sister. He knows he forgets things so why does he expect more from his sister. I am more tolerant of her than he is and her and I never did get along that well. If he can't remember somethings maybe he will forget that his sister is supposed to remember!!!!!!!

Doneit, I checked the two sites but they don't sound like the problem with DH. I will check with the pharmicist tomorrow about Claritin and also the Benadryl. Someone on this forum mentioned the Benadryl being okayed by their doctor.
