Divvi, I'm going out tomorrow. Thanks for the kick in the butt. We need a permanent pity party thread so we don't get off-topic so much. Sorry about that.

Wow, this thread has sure wandered around a lot -- from dogs to cats, then back to housebreaking a dog, then to a pity party, then sinful desserts, and now bra sizes! I'm going to bring it back to dogs -- dog poop, that is. No concern about housebreaking the new Doberman that adopted us three weeks ago -- she's an "outside dog" and has never been inside the house -- but now that we've finally gotten some rain and will start needing to mow the lawn again, I sure wish I could train her to poop in the woods on the vacant lot next door instead of leaving piles strategically placed all over our lawn. I have a friend who used to rate lawnmowers not in their width of cut or horsepower but in how many stories high they could fling a pile of dog mess. I'd say that my John Deere is about a three story model -- we'll know soon enough.....
When we had dogs (retrievers) I just found it easy to get one of those pooper scoopers, and police the yard before mowing. I fertilized the forsythia and it's thrived ever since! Up in the northeast, people all pick up their dog's poop all the time, in parks, beaches, walking around the neighborhood, etc.
I thought I was getting a dog for my DH but it turns out I'm the one who couldn't live without her. Of course he enjoys her very much but I'm the one who really needed a companion.
Our two small dogs bring us both so much pleasure -- they brighten every day. One caution : today, our new part time caregiver arrived for her first day of work. Her references are excellent and she seems just the perfect fit for us, but she has never owned a dog and is afraid of handling them. I told her that I would ease her into the situation, but I am concerned. If I leave the house for an extended period, the dogs may need to be taken outside and my DH can no longer handle the responsibility.
I'd be concerned, too, Brooke. She might let them escape! And I am quite certain dogs can sense fear and would intimidate her. Can you get an outdoor kennel, now that it's summer, in the shade, where they could go when she's there?
Bookworm....you or anyone else can have your choice of any of my dogs...fox hounds and an old working border collie/heeler. They're eating me out of house and home. They only like one or two kinds of food....the expensive ones and I buy two 50# bags at a time ($21 plus, each!)
