I know there aren't but a couple of us from KY, but today is the run for the roses. I have had a derby party for the past 20 years - but not this year. A few minutes ago DH asked when I was going to start decorating and getting the pitchers of mint juleps ready!!!! Told him no party. He said - well I want my mint julep. He doesn't even like juleps - never has. So....I'm off to go muddle some mint and make a pitcher - I love them. And if we have to skip his meds tonight - he can have a julep if he wants it!
I love the Kentucky Derby! I watch it every year though I haven't ever been. I used to go to the track a lot but don't get there much lately. I go to the Derby in a minute if I could get away from DH for long enough. Then I'd have an excuse to buy a new dress and a cool new hat.
It was a great race! Mine came in 5th. (Chocolate Candy - what else?_) DH enjoyed his julep and was rooting for the winner. Not in bed - just took the dog out for a walk. Maybe I'll fix him a julep every night. LOL
I forgot the race today. First one I have missed (on television) in years. My husband was born across the river from Louisville and lived and worked in Louisville for many years. He always said that he only went the the Derby 1 time and realized then that the best seat was at home in front of the t.V. My cousin and I used to bet on the Derby when we were kids. A dime. We chose our horses by reading the line up in the TV Guide and picking the names we liked best.
Mine That Bird ridden by Calvin Borel. He rode Street Sense to win 2 years ago. Mine That Bird was 50-1.
Owner, wih broken leg from motorcycle accident, bought Mine That Bird for $9500. Trailered him up from New Mexico, pulling with a Pick up. When interviiewed immeiately after, efore cup presentation, he made comment to the effect that, "They know me now." Had wonderful compliment for Calvin's riding.
Calvin is a treat to watch. He gets so into the race and is so over the top thrilled to win. . .
Moved from another site...this is more relevent to the race: :-)
lmohr, I wish we had been on the phone together during that yukky muddy race. I had thought about the Dubai entries, that were flown to Louisville in a specially outfitted jet airliner...and their wealthy owners, decked out in Italian suits.... vs. the retired school teacher/principal who had trained his own horse, cleaned out their stalls, ...and the guys who pulled the winner in a trailer across the country!!!!
The winner!!! 50 to 1 odds, that had been transported from New Mexico to Louisville in a simple horse trailer behind a pick up truck driven by the owner and the trainer. My kind of WOW!!! woooo woooo! My husband came in after the race was over and I started telling him all about it with the side stories...I was bubbling over... until I noticed he had turned his head and was looking out the window with is blank stare.
Moved mine also. Same here Mawzy. DH was taking his shower during the Derby Race today. When he got out I was excited and tried to share about the race with him. He had no interest at all. Just deflates you
We have watched this and the other two following races for years. I was able to visit the race track years ago but it just isn't the same without people and horses. We bet on the grays but still lostl So much fun to see that jockey win. Glad no horses or people got hurt this year. Was a little worried when Dunkirk came out of the gate. I got DH up from his nap in time to watch. I also watch golf so I can explain to DH what is happening. Now it has become my sport instead of his.
Glad someone else gets excited about these things. Another race in a couple of weeks!
Remember as a kid responding to advertising contest to name a foal--destine for the derby. Winner of contest would win the foal (probably a stake in the ownership)--(Not sure, I was only 8 or so.)
I am a native of Kentucky, I always enjoyed the Derby and went to many Derby Parties when I lived in Louisville. My DW and I were married on Derby Day in 1979. I watched it on TV today while my DW took a long nap.
Mine That Bird ran a great race, the story of that horse and owner is fantastic, almost like a good fiction story. The motorcycle probably cost more than the horse.
This is off topic from the Derby but carosi's comment about naming a horse reminded me of the story of when my husband was a little boy his mom won a contest by naming the horse for Randolph Scott (actor who played a cowboy in films--before my time). She sent in the name Scott Gun and won a pony. They kept the pony in their backyard for a while and my father in law build it a stable which eventually turned into their garage. They sold the pony after it was too much work to take care of and kept getting out of the yard and have to be chased back. I have a picture of the pony and my husband and one of his brothers playing cowboys with the pony.
Oh, carosi, I came across a clipping in which I'd won two tickets to see Lassie Come Home because I'd named some other dog in a newspaper contest!! I was very young too; I think they had those things all the time.
hey..put my little adopted state on the map for a day or so. My observation is that New Mexicans march to their own drummer. Wonderful back story and exciting race!
Lois, thank you for the replay site!! I had it taping while we were watching a movie, and when the movie was over, and we went to watch the tape, we found that cable had been off the air for two hours due to the thunderstorms! I had seen the paper Sunday morning and knew who won, but I loved watching the whole race! A magnificent run!
sheltifan, I cannot think New Mexico..without thinking "FOOD". They have the most delicious "NEW MEXICO" Mexican food ... the chili's are so wonderful..especially the Hatch chilis. Green Enchaladas, Green Chili Stew, Blue corn tortillas, ..mmmm...I'm dying for some Santa Fe tastes.
From NancyB..FYI...I'm from San Antonio...and the food here is among the best...the tastes are entirely different to those of us who fancy ourselves connoisseurs of chili flavors.
