My Dh has almost continuous runny nose. Clear dripping fluid. Allergy meds does not help. He takes Aricept, Namenda, Neurotin, Celexa, Flexeril and Tramadol. My Mom had the same kind of dripping nose during her last 2 years and she did not have AD or any of the above meds.
My DH also has the same problem. Nothing seems to help. He's on Aricept, and Namenda and I think I have read that one or both of them may cause this. Aggravates him and me!
Imohr so does my Dh. I spend a LOT of time running after him with tissues as he could care less about it. He takes none of the meds you listed and dr. is clueless about the cause.
Maybe someone else knows the answer, Imohr. My DH nose begins to run when he eats or chews. I give him chlortrimeton but not regularly. Just when its bothering him. My mom's is a bit different, same when eating/chewing but an added sneezing etc. as she reads the newspaper. She decided it must be an allergy to 'printers ink'. Anyway, in the past, during normal times, the only time DH had nose problems was in hay season . My mom is 88 but her little nose has been acting up for a number of years. Its got to be some kind of allergy response. The only med common to mom/DH is zocor.
My DH has the same problem. He's on aricept, namenda, lisinopril, drops for glaucoma (I can't remember the name, and I would have to disturb his sleep to find it) celebrex, and prednisone. His problem is also worse when he eats or drinks. He has tried a lot of medicine for it, but nothing helps. My allergist told him it was called gustatory rhinitis. He said there was a specific medication that would help. I can't remember the name of it either - I think it starts with A. Sometimes I wonder who has the memory problem here! DH's doctor wouldn't prescribe it for him, because it's contraindicated for people with glaucoma. If anyone has any answers, I sure hope he/she posts. The chronic runny nose is very irritating, especially for DH.
Haven't noticed a runny nose, but for the past couple of years my DW's eyes tear a lot when she chews -- little tears actually run down her cheeks. She's been on Aricept and Namenda for six or more years, and this business with the tears just started a couple of years ago.
I thought it was a side effect from his smoking. He has a lot of mouth movement (med. side effects), drinks decaf all day and night (when up). On: Lamictal,Geodon,Propranolol,Proscar,Potassium,Plavix,Lovastatin,Busparone,Tramadol,Primadone, fiber therapy, and a Vitamin.
DH also has a runny nose. He carries a clean hankerchief every day and has to blow or wipe his nose a lot. Sometimes if he's doing something with his hands, I have to remind him. Gets nasty sometimes.
Husband also has a runny nose...pretty constant. Drugs: Namenda,Razadyne,Lexapro,Mavik,Pravachol. Supplements:MCT,Cinnamon. Also on RAGE trial drug. Runny nose started before supplements and RAGE drug.
Drug websites list side effects of aricept to include dry eye, which can actually cause watery eyes (overcompensating to replace moisture, but with insufficient lubricating due to incorrect cellular tissue in the tears). It also lists watery nasal drip. My Dad had it right away when he started aricept when it first hit the market. My DH also developed the watery nasal drip.
New Realm - that could be in DH case but my Mom also had dry eyes and nasal drip her last year and she wasn't taking Aricept. It could have been one of her other meds though.
DH has to carry a tissue in his hand all the time. I wish there was something to do for it.
My husband is now using Atrovent for his runny nose. He uses 2 sprays in each nostril 4 times a day. It does help, although it doesn't entirely get rid of the problem.
Imohr, my DH has the teeth noise problem also. He makes that same exact noise. I keep thinking it is because he likes to hear it because he can stop it when I bring it up. He is not on any medication yet...but that could change.
Janet, that is exactly how my DHs doctor recommended use of the Atrovent spray. After a couple of years this issue disappeared and he no longer has that problem.
Hb has clear, drippy nose and yesterday he was vomiting clear liquid. Doesn't eat or drink much. Isn't doing the vomiting today, and nose doesn't seem so drippy; drippiness seems to come and go. Is no longer taking Aricept or Namenda--just lisinopril and vitamins.
My husband has the runny nose when he eats. He is on Aricept. I hate to add another medication, though it does bother our kids (older teenagers) when he doesn't wipe it quickly enough.
Same here but dh started with the runny nose 1-3 (?) years BEFORE DX in 2007. I remember that period well as our marriage was deteriorating for me because of behavioral changes which now seem clearly due to AD. He developed numerous disgusting personal habits like wiping his nose with linen napkins in restaurants and would screw up his face/nose it seemed 90% of the time I looked at him. It made him look horrifically ugly making me want to gag. All during this time he was resentful I wasn't turned on to him. I was too embarrassed to bring it up for the first couple years and blamed myself for being overly critical. We made love for the first time in over 2 years after he was diagnosed. I suppose my resentment lifted and I felt compassion and love for him again. It was a sweet almost euphoric, but very short-lived time, for us. He was 64, I was 54, at time of fx.
Has someone already mentioned the condition "vasomotor rhinitis?" It is an over- active response of the nose to such stimuli as the wind blowing, cold temperatures, eating, eating of hot foods, spicy foods, red wine. There is a prescription spray for it that I once had but never bothered to use once I knew what the problem was and had read the side effects to the spray. I seldom have the problem now.
ENT said sometimes signals to salivary glands get mixed up & go to nose as we age. Thus, drippy nose at meals. Treat like a drippy nose. BUT I will agree that my husband's drippy nose seems to have come along with memory loss.
