Years ago the man who played Gomar Pyle opened his mouth to sing and shocked the living daylights out of everyone listening. He had a wonderful operatic voice, but didn't have the face to go along with it.

I saw what I think was the entire event. Although Simon did make a face, he did not say anything nasty to the woman. in fact I've never seen him say anything nasty to anyone in the early stages of American Idol unless that person got nasty first.

What really saddens me is that someone with that kind of voice spent her entire life taking care of other people and having no life of her own. What a huge waste of talent.

    Starling,
So glad you mentioned Gomer Pyle,he was great! If you haven't heard Simon say anything nasty to anyone unless he was just responding to them then you haven't watched very long. He's been nasty to many and left them in tears.I think he has been nicer this last year or so because of public outcry.
I hope we see much more of Susan Boyle--GREAT TALENT!!

The actor's name is Jim Nabors, and yes, it was stunning to hear when he opened his mouth and sang so beautifully. I could not believe what I was watching the first time I saw it.

Love Jim Nabors and Wayne Newton is another one that was a big surprise. I remember when he appeared on Bonanza and shocked the world so to speak with his great voice and baby face!

My son (musician/college teacher) recently performed in the band that played for Wayne Newton and was amazed at how talented he is! He did his own sound check, which is unusual. And, even on some other instuments, he was talented, not just showing off a little.

I think many people didn't realize that Jim Nabor's character "Goober" was just that. He was ACTING - He became so type-cast as Goober, we rarely saw him in other roles. Seems I heard he had a liver transplant years ago. (???) Wonder if he is still alive?
For years he sang "My Old Kentucky Home" in the Kentucky Derby Opening Ceremonies. He had an amazing voice.

Nancy, I was wondering the same thing, so I Googled him, and he is still alive. He has a Christmas program in Hawaii planned for this year. Nothing else that I could find, though. He has a great voice, and is so lovable in his characters.

Yes, he's still living. You can look up Jim Nabors on wikipedia.
