I will be getting a new Dell in a couple of days. I don't know much about them except SHOPPING "-), internet, bills, etc. My husband used to set a new computer up and get me going, but....... My question, will I still be able to access this site, or will I have to register again. I know some of you are very computer savvy out there. I am going to have Dell come out, but not sure when they can get here and I want to play with my new toy while I wait for the service man.
Yes you will be able to access this site once you establish your internet connection...before you swap computers, make sure you transfer files from one computer to another, such as your photos documents and favorite websites.....the transition is very easy, especially with windows vista.......feel free to contact me if you need any help setting it all up.....
You should have bought two things from Dell when you bought the computer. They have a hardware group that you will need for several years. You contact them by phone.
In addition you can buy either a year's worth of software help, or just help with setting up the computer. Setting up the hardware is INCLUDED in the purchase. I had to call for help when I set mine up. But setting up the software is extra, and worth every penny.
Good luck. One of the things that will happen is that you will now know exactly how to set up a computer, and it will make other things much easier for you.
You WILL have to log in again to this site, and to others, with a new computer (which will have new software, including web browser). DO you know all your passwords? Do you use bookmarks to get to places? You need to be sure you save your passwords and your bookmarks. These are different depending on what browser you use, you may have them written down somewhere... That's the most urgent thing.
One very easy solution to any problems is to power up both computers side by side and plug in a usb to usb cable between them....then just transfer files from old to new....there is a utility on the new computer that will allow you to do this vey simply....if you have a dell tech come out, just tell him you want the files transferred and if he knows anything at all, he shud be able to do it in about 15 minutes...really simple....
For you computer gurus - my son wants to connect his two computers. One is a laptop running Vista - the other is a desktop running Windows XP. I told him he needs to buy a cable to connect them, but will USB work or does he need one like used for printers and such? He wants to access programs on their laptop without installing on the desktop.
Phranque, your scenario looks good, but doesn't always work. When I bought my present computer, a Dell, I got the package where a technician came to the house to transfer data. He said, as you did, that it would take only 15 minutes. Three hours later he gave up, having transfered only half of what I had. I was finally able to transfer the rest in small batches over the next several days. And it wasn't because I had that much. Some of the programs were not easily compatible with the new computor.
Nothing is perfect...I am still trying to run old programs that used to work on DOS....yes some have to be reinstalled, but with a new computer with Vista, the transfer is quite easy. I was mostly refering to her personal files, such as web favorites, documents and pictures....Other programs are best to be reinstalled, because all the drivers must also be updated...Also, her new computer will have new software also, and sometimes that may be better than the old software....sort of like trading in an old car,...you take everything out of the trunk and glovebox, and learn how to drive the new car.....
Part of my problem was that a lot of my information was stored on "Microsoft Works", which is an old program not used any more. I did get a newer version of it with the new computer, but it was not easy to transfer the data due to differences in the program. It's working well now, but I am concerned about the next time I get a new computer.
THANKS - I DID WHAT YOU ALL SAID AND IT WORKED. I AM PRINTING YOUR SUGGESTION TO BE ABLE TO REFER TO LATER AS MY MEMORY IS GOING .I DID HOOK IT UP MYSELF AND IT WASN'T HARD.
