I can hardly believe it, but my DH died early Friday morning. He has only been diagnosed for 3 years, but has been on a very rapid descent from Alzheimer's Disease ever since. After an infection, hospital and rehab stay, I moved him to a memory care unit in an assisted living facility 3 weeks ago. After the first week, Hospice took him on and by the next week he was on 24 hr. crisis watch with them. He couldn't swallow on Monday and died 4 days later. I heartily recommend Hospice and am glad for him that it was over so quickly. He saw his brother suffer with the disease and I know he did not want that for himself.

    Dear FLgirl,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. My DH also was only formally diagnosed a bit over 3 years when he died 3 weeks ago. Much the same scenario in the last 2 months too. Infection, hospital, then to gero-psych. So sudden and unexpected, yet like you, I am grateful that my DH didn't suffer long at the end.

FLgirl: As caregivers we are often reminded to breathe. So it is now, take a little while and just breathe. You have and odd couple of weeks ahead of you. Let family and friends help you. My wife passed six weeks ago. It almost seems like a long time ago now. I'm glad you had hospice. It made it easier(relatively) for us, too.

My DW lost her father 4 yrs ago to AD. We had him in a real nice nursing home run by Baptists. A nurse called Carol late afternoon and said than her father had passed away during his afternoon nap. Carol replied "Oh Thank You Lord!" We laughed rather that was a proper response but decided it was definitely OK. His life and hers are much better know. Carol is in stage #6-7 now. HUG Bill E

I know it is a shock, but I think it is a blessing also to have the shorten life given what this disease can do.
I hope that you will find peace soon.
