I can't find where we were discussing hearing. As I have said before, my wife chewed her hearing aid in half a few months ago. I decided not to replace it. 2 or 3 weeks ago someone suggested that I try the "silversonic XL" which looks like an ear cell phone. I got one and tried it today. She would not keep it in more than 1/2 hour. I'll try it again when we are at a group study where the leader has a very soft voice and she can't hear him. If that doesn't work, I'll give up and let her remain in her own world.

Marsh - I hope she decides to use it, at least while at your group study - for you and her.

marsh-- have you tried it yourself at all? Am thinking of getting one for me. I have some hearing loss, but my problem is, DH who also has hearing loss, HEARs the TV in the next room with the door closed, when he's trying to sleep and the volume is set very low. BIG ISSUE.
I sit 5' from the set and can barely hear it, then when the furnace runs (register blows toward chair about 6' away), I can't make it out at all. Same thing happens with phone calls, he can be the length of 2 rooms away and hear my end of the call, but he can't hear what I say when I'm sitting at the table with him.

carosi, he may have "selective hearing". My dh has that too in regards to my voice.

my ear dr told me womens voices have a harder 'decibel'? when someone is trying to hear them. he said mens voices are easier to understand..so i have tried lowering my pitch when i speak to DH and he does hear me better. divvi

marsh, I know with my FIL's (glasses) after he had lost several pair, my MIL just got him some peepers that you can get at any drug store. Anyway after a while it's like they just get used to having them anymore. Not an issue. Hopefully by trying divvi's suggestion you may solve the problem.

Imohr, even before AD I always said my Dh had selective hearing. I know he selected not to hear me! LOL

divvi, when I was in junior high my Grandpa lost his voice box to cancer. Plus he was hard of hearing, the combination was real fun for the family. But as you said, he had a horrible time with womens voices. Always said he couldn't understand me. Something about my voice being toooooo soft................. If he only knew what he created! Cause now I got a big mouth.

I am aware of selective hearing. The 7 of us gave my Mom a real run while we were growing up. We were right there for the good stuff, and couldn't hear a word if it was chores.

My loss is in the perfect range to not be able to hear medium tone voices (like being in the kitchen and you know the TV's on but you can't make it out. If someone with a voice in that range is talking to me, it helps greatly if they're in the same room, and looking at me. It alo helps when I have my glasses on, facial expressions help--no I don't read lips.<lol>

DH wore bifocals, and now goes without and doesn't have any problem with that. Dito his hearing aid. Wish I could do that (maybe?)

My husband simply stopped wearing his hearing aids in January 2008. I'm told that at some point he will simply "forget" to put on his glasses as well. Hasn't happened yet, but there are times he doesn't realize he isn't wearing them until after we have gone out to go somewhere.

Divvi, I had my wife try the "hearing aid" during church today. She kept it on for the whole service, then took it off. This afternoon we went to a concert (Gilbert and Sullivan songs) and she didn't need it. I'll try it again on Tuesday for bible study.

Carosi, I tried it myself, but not very long. My hearing is "perfect", so I really don't need anything. It is a little hard to adjust the volume for my wife, since the volume I would use is not even close to what she would need.

Carosi, don't forget Closed Captioning as an alternative when you can't hear the tv. I know when my Dad lost his hearing (Menier's Disease) cc was a lifesaver.

I'm the one with the hearing loss (one aid in each ear) and I love CC on the TV. I have had "perfect hearing" people tell me that they missed some of the comments that show up on the CC. Having to use the closed captions does make it a bit more difficult to knit and watch TV - it slows me down some but I do manage that too.

Follow-up on the new "hearing aid". Today I put it in while we were at bible study. It must have worked because she seemed to be much more with the discussions. She, also, was able to read a passage when asked. I plan to be selective in when I have her wear it. I took it off as soon as bible study was over, even though we were going to lunch with another couple.
