Up until a few months ago, I had not thought a nursing home was in my hear future. After my DH was hospitilized in Jan, he seems to have "fallen off a cliff". He can no longer see, his walking is compromised, he falls all the time. His meds work to controll the constant agitation but unless he is "dopey", he is nasty. Twice my 24 year old daughter came for dinner and he does not recognize her or her boyfriend (who had been around for 3 years and my husband "communicated" with). I am finding it very difficult to "handle" him. He doesn't want to brush his teeth, shave, shower or get dressed. He hasn't done any of this independently for years but now refuses for me to do it. His dr recommended I apply for a nursing home and I did. They called me 2 weeks ago and said there might be an opening in a few weeks. I called again today and she did not have anything more definate to offer (timewise). I was so upset about applying but I fully realize he needs more help than I can give. Now I can't wait for someone else to do this caregiving. My husband is 61 years old amd was diagnosed 8 years ago. His disease is advancing so quickly I doubt he Namenda really helped. Thanks for letting me vent. By the way, I had to reregister because the softwear wouldn't let me sign in under my original info. I am KathrynnotEugene or Kathryn but still the same person. Thanks again.
Kathy-once you make up your mind the waiting for an opening is deadly. At least you are working toward a solution. Hang in there and we'll be here for you. If he has a few good days while you are waiting don't second guess your decision. Nora
Kathryn, Hopefully you can place him soon. Please don't second guess yourself. Sorry for all that you are going through. We will be here for you every step of the way.
