Our bluepoint Siamese has been missing since yesterday evening. He's an indoor cat. He might have gotten out but he's never shown any inclination to try to do that; the other one does but he's here and worried too. We've been ripping up the house looking for him and I've posted posters.
I know the feeling. I won't leave the house until I see both boys. My neighbor's 4 paw declawed cat got out. Two days later she came back home. I hope the same thing happens with Chimi.
If it's been cold, up inside the car engine ... they like the warmth and protection.
Under furniture.
Up under/inside a LazYBoy, hide-a-bed couch, or up inside the bed box springs. (My schizo cat would hide up in all those places, and you couldn't see him unless you turned the furniture over.)
In closets (I had one get inside a hanging clothes bag).
In kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. Inside shower stall.
Behind furniture, behind the washer or dryer, behind the refrigerator. Sometimes they get on top and then fall down behind.
Inside the washer or dryer, the oven, the dishwasher.
In a bureau drawer.
In the fireplace behind the screen (geri cat loved that), up the chimney?
Crawl space.
Loose air register cover.
Laundry basket or hamper.
Under an overturned box or basket.
(Some of these have been hiding places for hamsters I've had in the past ... a loose hamster is reeeeealy hard to find.)
Oh, briegull, I hope you find him. We lost one of ours for a few days once, he had crawled into a hole in the wall that was there temporarily, while some work was being done. My DH made the hole big enough to crawl through and went in with a flashlight to find her. she couldn't find her way out. He found her, and we lived happily ever after. check to see if there's any small space she could have gotten into. Love and good thoughts to you in your quest.
The experts say an indoor cat usually doesn't stray away from the house but may be too scared to answer or come out. Check the bushes right outside the house. Put a litter box. blanket or box with your clothing right out side the doors The inside possibilities are endless as we all know but check them too with treats. Good luck.
OH NOooooo briegull ...... yet another reason for me to shed more tears - I'm such a softie when it comes the our four footers, be they dogs or cats - it doesn't matter ..... they all give so much and ask for so little.
Sending good thoughts and prayers from Canada that Chimi will come back home real quick .... you just don't need something more to worry about.
Oh briegull, I know you are heartsick. I was hoping to get to the bottom of this thread and learn that you had found Chimi. I would be beside myself with worry. I am sure you will post as soon as Chimi is found. I will be sending you lots of positive thoughts & waves of love.
no sign of him. I've left the garage door open enough for him to slip in. My daughter and I are just distraught. Even my husband knows not to be difficult!
Have you checked on the top shelf of the closets? This is where I found ours after calling and looking and looking for him. He never mewed but looked me straight in the eye and yawned when I found him.
We lost our little Noche one day. I was frantic. Finally, I had to get a towel out of the linen closet ad there he was. All curled up in a little ball on top of my clean tableclothes. I was so glad to see him I didn't even scold him for hiding like that. I just sent the top tablecloth to the laundry and paid the $5 to have it washed and ironed. Such is life.
I have Chimi on my prayer list. God made our little furry friends and I now He wants them safe as much as we do.
we have a black cat who thinks the neighborhood is here. BOth J. and I left our windows open and she heard a growling match just now. Went down, brought him in, he's eating. WHEW!!
Why is it that you can go through day after day after day of monotonous sameness, dementia care, etc.. and keep your cool. And carefully prepare and post signs all over the neighborhood, and keep your cool. And then when the cat comes back, you lose it and bawl!!
He finally woke up, inspected the whole house, and is back to normal. I don't THINK my husband opened the door, I think it was just that either my daughter or I thought we'd closed it tight and we hadn't - Friday was windy. I've spent the day recuperating. I'm sure it's all your good thoughts and vibes and love that made him come back!!! ;-)
did any of yall watch the cat agility on TV tonite on klru? hilarious. catagility.org i think is the website. so cute to see those cats run the gaunlet!
I was surprised the cats did anything the arena was so noisy. Personally I don't like to see animals "trained". Obedience in as other matter. I was always offended by a magnificent elephant balanced on a silly ball. When Circ d'soliel-sorry-can't spell it first surfaced I was delighted with their no animal policy. I met the white tigers in an elevater in Los Vegas. Their trainer was taking them to the roof for some play time. Magnificent animals. Well loved it think.
Chimi loves to be trained (loves cat treats), it's just that I forget to do it. He was taught to sit on his little red chair (which was mine 70 years ago, which I sat on when I was being punished). He jumps from there through a ring (made from an old lampshade bottom) and gets a treat. He's very proud of his trick and goes back and sits on the chair waiting for me to get the ring, hold it up for him,so he can jump. There are all kinds of things you can teach an animal with a "clicker" which is just a "cricket" from our childhood. If you're interested look up "cat training" on youtube.
For the most part animals LOVE to be trained, if it's done right. It's like our working puzzles or running races, it's challenges we enjoy trying to meet. An elephant on a ball may look silly, but there's a degree to which it's more OUR perception of them being embarrassed about it than their own embarrassment. Like our perception that, say, our spouses would be embarrassed to wear pull-up pants to church.
At the zoo many of the animals are clicker trained. Not to do tricks but to learn to get in their transport boxes upon request, to put their leg/arm out to get a needle stick (to check their blood for problems, or give them meds), etc. Even the elephants are taught to back up against the wall in their inside enclosure to poop - so they won't walk in it. One of the keepers was very good at training them. THe problem was, she said "Katie, s**t". and would say it in front of many kids, families, etc. Katie was very good about doing it, too!! but the parents weren't so happy about hearing it!!
One of the docents eats at a McD's before coming and always runs into one of the keepers there, who orders a big breakfast burger. Cuts it in half and carefully wraps the second half. Why? to take back to Gracie. Gracie is a large - probably 250-300 lb. moon bear in his charge. What about her brother George? He's too fat!! Doesn't get any. All of the keepers spend an enormous amount of time providing enrichment for the animals - distributing scents around so they can find goodies, giving them balls to chase or limbs to chew on or climb on.
Naughty kitty for causing so much worry. But, you're home now and I'm glad you're back safe and sound. Hope you had a great adventure and wish you could tell us all about it but we will just have to imagine what all you did.
Briegull, et al: Many years ago I was also a docent--at the Los Angeles Zoo. We had a course in zoology, got to pet a python, go behind the enclosures and all around. It was great but I soon learned I did not want to lead the younger children on the tours. They were too interested in the vending machines, drinking fountains & always needed to use the bathroom. They didn't care about the gestation period of an elephant (wouldn't have understood anyway) or how many bones are in a giraffe's neck, etc. With the older kids the trick was to get to the enclosure first so I could glance at the sign and refresh my memory about the animal inside. I have not tried to train my Nueve, but she pretty much has me trained. She knows where to find me when she wants something--at the computer, in the kitchen--she finds me and makes her wishes known. And in bed, in the morning, she sits on my bedside table and drills her eyes into my face and if I turn my back, she goes across the top of my pillows and sits on the other bedside table and stares me down until I get up. But the zoo was great, hadn't thought of it in some time. Sounds like you also really enjoy it.
Oh, the cat's stare. How can they do that? They don't even blink. Noche's eyes are too big for his face and they are not yellow. They are a darker shade and on that black kitty, unless I look at him in a proper light, I can't even see them. He disappeared this evening. Again, he was in the linen closet. He loves his new home.
I had a cat sneak outside once and she was gone for several days. We looked everywhere, for hours every day, walking and calling. Except she wasn't actually gone. We lived in a trailer park, and some idiot a few trailers away was leaving food outside for any animal who happened past. Cat hung around there because she thought the all-she-could-eat buffet was great. I didn't, had words with the idiot (who hadn't made any attempt to try to find her owner), and took my baby home again.
My female hua has that infernal unblinking laser stare when shes hungry. :) and shes always hungry but esp in bed at 6am i 'feel' the look..is that possible? hah. i am teaching her to talk. she says 'break-fast'..in doggy language but does use 2 syllables and its so funny my 6yr old gdaugther just cracks up when she does it on cue..she is a funny little dog. someday i am going to post a pic of this face that could launch a thousand ships..:) divvi
Meeko is on my lap right now. His pink little nose is soggy as he pokes it under my arm. When he is happy his nose gets very pink and wet-and he is almost always happy. Dennis my senior cat is still chasing Meeko around the house. They both need the exercise.
I just had something nice happen. I had emailed the animal control here in town on Saturday morning, just to notify them that he was missing; he sent back a msg that he had received it and keep him informed, so I replied when the cat came back. Just now the animal control guy CALLED. Was I SURE it was a neighbor CAT who was yowling at him? (yes) Did he get any marks on him (no). We have had rabies in the area, and we do have coons - and coyotes - so I'm sure that's what he was worrying about (me too). But how nice to follow up!
Chimi is a big one for the stare. I call him Keith Olberman. That indignant look!
Bluedaze--yes that about does it. I find I ask him what he wants. I keep offering all kinds of things--canned mean, a scratch behind the ears, "do you want out, Kitty? Hmmm? Out?" as I open the door and he stands there and stares at me while he tries to make up his mind.
And yes, when you're busy and he's staring, you can definitely feel it. He acts like he's being abused because I don't talk 'cat language.'
Oh, BTW, Petsmart had a book at Christmas called ICat Whispering. My grandson said I needed that book so I would know what Noche wanted. The family has started calling him "el diablo negre." The black devil. That's not very nice. He's a verry good little kitty. :)
I haven't been able to do so. I tried. Even putting it in a word document and cutting and pasting. If you find a way, let us all know! now a Snapfish link can be copied and pasted....
Mawzy, just wait until you've gone somewhere for a couple of days, leaving your cat behind. When you return, you will get a Look that is unlike any other Look in a cat's repertoire. You will feel guilty beyond words, and willing to do anything to get forgiveness.
